<p>Wait, Steven's gem <i>never </i>glowed before the events of "Gem Glow"? It's obvious that he's eaten Cookie Cat and it's his favorite ice cream, so why would he notice that his gem glows in said episode, and never before that?

<p>He's a growing boy. He had finally grown enough that his gem would activate, for the first time, as shown in Gem Glow.

<p>Well cookie cats weren't going out of business before, it seems his powers are activated to protect people, so he wanted to protect the last of his cookie cats.

Maybe it was due to his happiness caused by the Gems doing something so thoughtful for him.

It probably did sometimes glow when he was little but it glowed in the first episode because he was so happy.
