New Infoboxes, part 2

Hey all!

In an earlier thread started by my boss, JoePlay, you all seemed really enthusiastic about the new infoboxes, based on the model he created. And, hey, I know how it is. You get excited about something in late summer and then school starts and you've suddenly lost your window of opportunity to do some intense editing.

Well, even though a few months have passed, you're still one of our top wikis and we still wanna help you achieve this conversion that'll be great for all your mobile users! (As of today, that's 40% of all US-based users, by the way — or, globally, some 353K unique visitors whose experience you could be improving!)

So that's why our team of engineers in Poland that Joe and I work with wanna help give you a leg up. During the month of October we wanna offer you direct help. We'll do the infobox conversion, with your help, as long as you still approve of the basic design that Joe created.

You read that right.

We're gonna give you our top Engineers – and no, I'm not saying I'm one of those :) — at no cost to work directly on your wiki. You may see some names you've never seen before suddenly in your MediaWiki:Wikia.css. But don't be alarmed. We're just going to be applying some nifty CSS to make your infoboxes look like they do now — but be way more mobile.

So whaddya say? Any objections?

What if we decide to change the CharacterBox template (like adding new sections or changing the appearance)? Shall we have to change the draft version so the mobile users will be able to see the difference?

No. The way it goes is this. You guys compare the /Draft to the current version. You then tell us if there are any changes you'd like to see. But let's draw a reasonable line under the discussion, and say that by Monday we'll have addressed the concerns you've expressed over the weekend. Then the /Draft is moved to the actual {{CharacterBox}}. At that point, the code goes live, and it's like any other template. You can tinker with it afterwards, tweak it, change new sections, even tweak the appearance — and then those changes go live to desktop/mobile/every type of user, just like what happens when you edit any other template.

So... can whatever was done to make it look nice be placed in Monobook or a common place that all skins use? Because I'm sitting over here like the kid someone accidentally forgot at a rest stop and had to turn around for. :-/ (That is, the infoboxes are the ugly default styling in Monobook but not in Oasis, which is the exact thing I was trying to avoid by asking specifically about Monobook during discussion upthread...)

If you're still alive and reading this:

Colors like "lightgray" or "red" are not working for the BGColor section as seen here.
Can you make the FontColor section for the template? White text looks undreadable in some templates as seen here.
If you changed the infoboxes design, why don't you change the Character Box with Tabber' design? It's not like mobile users will see it, since it's not drafted, but it wouldn't look alien for deskctop version if you do.

Excitingly, we're debuting a new feature in PIs within the next 24-48 hours that will allow you to effectively have the tabbed experience of your current infobox pictures. More to come as it goes live!

Hey :) Your request hasn't been forgotten, but it's a matter of priorities. The vast majority of users see Oasis. So we just wanted to get that right first. Almost all the styling that happens for Oasis can be mimicked in Oasis by the use of an additional, simple �CSS class.
