Another unpopular opinion: Change Your Mind is one of the worst Steven Universe episodes. The first time I watched it, I thought it was good, then the second time, I noticed just how bad it was. Also the title, like, Change YOUR Mind? It seems egotistical to me, I don’t know why. But, the worst parts were, the Diamonds, and the new fusions. I’ll discuss the latter first.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the designs, and the episode made Rainbow 2.0 my favourite fusion, but.. It’s the way they were introduced. Take Smoky for an example, that was a fusion that spent time and character development leading up to it, it was perfect. But then all these one-off fusions came in and kinda ruined fusion for me. Also, the fact Steven was able to fuse with just the gemstones! Like, come on.

First off, it's called "Change Your Mind" to reference the song at the end of the episode, also called "Change Your Mind". The context of the song is someone changing their own mind, not being forced to by someone else.

Second, calling the fusions one off is jumping the gun a bit, isn't it? We still have the entirety of Future to go through, where they could appear again.

Also, what's wrong with Steven fusing with gemstones? It was a nice escalation of his empathy powers and the Gems' natural reforming ability, in my opinion.

I think Steven fusing with gemstones.... kinda cheapens the vulnerability factor Gems have whenever they’re poofed. Like, from now on, say a gem gets poofed. Amethyst gets impaled or whatever and poofs. Steven could rush in, or pull in her gemstone with his bubble, fuse with her, and now not only is she back within seconds, but now Smoky’s here, they’re even more powerful.

If a gem gets poofed, that should leave them vulnerable for a long time. It’s not just an outfit change, it’s recovering from a fatal injury. Steven being able to force them back with little to no consequence removes the tension.

Hmm... Fair point.

I wonder if they'll explain in some kind of restriction to keep the tension, like "Steven was only able to fuse with them because they were ready to reform, but Yellow's powers were blocking them from doing so".

“Blocking them from doing so”?! Like, they were trapped in an electrical cage, and if they reform from it right away...it will “kill” them??

I was thinking more like the electrical cells from "Jail Break". if the Gems tried to reform before a certain point (i.e. leave the cell), they would be shocked and forced back into their gemstones.

Thinking about it this way makes a nice parallel to Jail Break, actually...
