I can still remember the day my sister asked me to watch SU's "first two-parter" with her. And, man, was I tense all during Mirror Gem. I was like, "Steven? What is in there? Why is it saying you're its friend? This is concerning!!"

And then Lapis came out, and I'm like, "Wait, so who's this chick?. . . Aw, she fell over. That was sad." It was the first time we discovered the Crystal Gems weren't the last of their kind.

I remember thinking that Lapis didn't look or sound scary, but also I knew that didn't necessarily mean anything. . . under that cute and innocent exterior, she could have easily been a monster. And even though she lashed out seconds later, what really struck me was the pain I heard in her voice.

By the end of "Ocean Gem," I remember concluding she wasn't a monster, after all. She had hurt people, but she hadn't enjoyed doing it, and she stopped as soon as she was given a viable alternative. Her cuteness didn't tell the whole story, but it wasn't deceptive either.

My writer's mind took note of the fact that she was an intriguing and sympathetic character. I didn't know I loved her until Jailbreak ripped my heart out.

And the rest is kind of history.
