<p>My theory is that organics made her, and she was made to be a mum.  Think about what she said about her purpose: </p><p>I'm suppose to know better, I'm suppose to be better, I'm suppose to make everything better! </p><p>It parallels what Amethyst felt about Rose: </p><p>She was supposed to be so great, she was supposed to know everything, she was supposed to make everything better! </p><p>from the way Amethyst described her, it made her sound like a mum. </p>

<p>I wanted to find out more about the gems' origins.  And for STeven to meet his grandparents. </p><p>Also, WHAT WAS IN THE CHEST???? </p>

<p>I think calling her a villain is going a bit too far.  Sure, she did terrible things, but she did good things too.  It's worth remembering that with alot of the terrible things you've mentioned there are positive sides to them too. </p><p>

2. yes it can be argued that giving birth to Steven knowing that she would disappear was selfish, but the fact that she gave up her existence to bring him into the world was also selfless. </p><p>3.  Yes in a fit of rage she unitentionally damaged Pink Pearl (and it's not like Steven has been innocent of losing control), but since then she tried to change. </p><p>4.  Yes she made the diamonds think she got shattered, and almost every gem was corrupted, but remember that she felt it was the only way to end the war and she had no idea the consequence of her actions. </p><p>5.  Yes she bubble Bismuth and lied to everyone, because Bismuth wanted to shatter gems and Rose did not (even if that doesn't justify what she did). </p><p>6. And how was she responsible for Steven losing control of her powers? </p>

<p>I'm hoping that they will release something that focuses on rose, and hopefully feature the origin of the gem race </p>

Hopefully their relationship improved after his meltdown.

<p>my series basically runs in parallel with the main series so pretty much the same number of season plus a couple of arcs, but the movie comes after the epilogue if that makes sense. </p>

I've come up with a whole series.

<p>You know, I think a number of fans (e.g. one from theroundtable) weren't convinced that Steven really came to terms with how he felt about his mum, despite others fans saying he did, and I was like, really?  Did he really? cos that didn't really come across.  And it didn't help that when he first found out the truth his first instinct was to deflect it to how garnet felt and despite amethyst telling him he should be the one most affected the series agreed with him.  I think a number of fans expected him to truly come to terms at the end.  I even expected him to converse with his pink self to help him come to terms with his mum, but nope.  She was just stuffed in lion's mane.  I mean sure she did terrible stuff, but even so, to do this to your mum who gave up her existence for you just seemed cold. </p>

<p>" I’m sure Pink really did believe she was happy with her family for a long time, though we know how quickly and strongly her mood could change when she didn’t get what she wanted, which implies that she’s used to getting her way with the Diamonds" </p><p>Really?  Cos my impression was that she rarely got what she wanted, e.g. getting her own colony. </p><p>"It has been established in “Volleyball” that Pink Pearl’s crack was psychosomatic, and NOT caused by the physical blast of Pink’s tantrum." </p><p>shell's exact words were along the lines of whereas the physical damage was long gone the psychological had remained.  Which we saw in parellel with steven, i.e. even though he healed physically from his encounters, he hadn't mentally. </p><p>"Pink understood the effects that colonization had, she just didn’t truly understand the ramifications of that until she met other sentient life on Earth." </p><p>Pink: look at this, pearl!  we're creating life from nothing! </p><p>Rose: we're not creating life from nothing. we're taking life.  and leaving nothing behind. </p><p>steven: so she did want to protect the earth.  she didn't realise what it was doing to the planet. </p><p>"she was still working both sides, and personally attacked her own rebel forces as Pink during this time, merely to keep up appearances." </p><p>Did she, though? From my impression of what blue said that pink didn't have to do anything, that she didn't really need to do anything on her side much, the homeworld side did fine without her giving orders, although she might have kept up appearances if she came face to face with he own crystal gems as pink diamond. </p><p>"I don’t believe that Pink’s colony was hinged on Pink being on Earth. If that was the case she’d have merely left as Pink and returned as Rose. The colony would have been built regardless, Pink would just have been forcibly removed for not completing it and Yellow or Blue would have taken over." </p><p>blue: as long as you are there to rule, this colony will be complete. </p><p>"I also don’t see the Corrupting Light as a display of their love and care for Pink, though that was surely part of it. It was more of a knee jerk reaction to being truly defied for the first time ever, and also the realization that they weren’t untouchable and that Diamonds could be killed by a lowly Quartz. Better to do away with all traces of the rebellion rather than risk a weapon capable of killing them falling into the wrong hands." </p><p>I still think this was more of  a reaction to losing someone they cared about even though most of them weren't good at showing it as opposed to merely being 'furious' as garnet put it. </p>

<p>@S10127470 </p><p>So, let me get this straight.  You're main criticisms of the su villains are: </p><p>1. There's not enough of them. </p><p>2. there's no arch enemy. </p><p>3. they're all gems. </p><p>4. they were easily redeemed. </p><p>Sorry mate, but I don't get you criticisms, or how they are cons (except for the last point but let me come back to that one).  how is the number, that there no archnemeis, and that they were all gems downsides?  There was enough in my opinion (or antagonists would be more accurate, which would include the corrupte).  Why does a series always need an overarching villain?  As for the fact they were all gems, it seemed established that this was a conflict between earth and homeworld.  Also I think the theme for earth was that it was more unique than perfect. </p><p>As for them too easily redeemed...yes, I can see where you're coming from.  While watching change your mind, I was like 'really?  You're this easily turned around' for Blue and Yellow.  The only redemption that made sense was White, with her universe view destroyed, and now open to new ideas.  although at the end, I was like, I guess we're forgiving you now for eveyrthing you've done!  But as for them redeemed, you could see in the movie, they didn't truly accept Steven's views and were just doing it to please him (although they did come around in future, finding more positive uses of their powers and facing the consequences of their actions). </p><p>That said, I was kinda hoping that White would become the arch enemy (And she kinda was, being in charge of the gems, and steven would blame her for everything he went through), and I was kinda hoping that it would be revealed that she was a puppet master who was watching everything that happened in the show, but in the end it confirmed she was more greater scope than true antagonist.  </p><p>And I might have liked meeting new alien antagonists after the main series ended, but at that point they wanted to wrap up the series which meant no new antagonist could be introduced aside from the film. </p>

<p>moving it around happened in suf, leaving it in lion's mane.  And he never took it out again.  Which was such a shame, because you could have had a moment when he truly accepted his mom (Which I don't believe he did, at least not by the finale), taking the portrait out and hanging it again, even taking a picture of it with him when he left beach city. </p>

<p>Can't imagine myself as a villain in steven universe.  But on the other hand if I could conceive one... </p><p>He'd be an interdimensional fourth wall breaker.  Like the diamonds originally he would be a perfectionist, who would mock Steven's own philosophy that things are fine the way they are, flaws and all, when in his opinion flaws are flaws, plain and simple, which should be targeted and criticised rather than tolerated and accepted.  in his opinion, striving against flaws is what leads to advancement, and believes that steven's belief of acceptance is just there to spare people's feelings.  from his point of view, by telling people they're fine the way they are, he is denying them the opportunity to improve themselves by saying they don't need to improve themselves.  From the way he sees it, Steven is conservate, while the villain himself is progressive.  At the same time the villain has an utmost loathing of his appearance and who he is, but rather than accept that he would prefer to admit that he is flawed and strive to improve himself. </p><p>Unlike Steven, who hates violence, the villain revels in it, enjoying a good fight or someone who can match him, and much like a character in dragonball z has several forms, each more powerful than the last. </p><p>Also while not against the odd crying thinks people cry way too much in the series.  AND hates pink. </p><p>What is his evil plan?  To create an alternate timeline where all the gems on earth turn into hybrids like Steven just so he could see how they grow with their abilities compared to Steven. </p><p>What is his goal: to see how it all unfolds.  Until the prime timeline/main series reveals something that contradicts what was established in this alternate timeline that can't be easily resolved or retconned.  Unwilling to accept being responsible for a continuity error or plot hole, once he was satisfied with the experiment the villain would seek to erase the universe of this alternate timeline. </p><p>How is he going to defeat the heroes: first try to get his puppet to erase that earth, and when that fails, come through a rift in space in his flying fortress threatening to destroy it, until some of the hybrids come to the fortress to face him and when intrigued with one of them decides to come back in their prime, and hijack Spinel's plot to destroy the earth. </p><p>How are they going to win: at first, an adult steven will fight the villain face to face, and during the battle and his transformations the other crystal gems will join in the fight as well until he assumes his ultimate, universe destroying form.  At that point the garnet hybrid will tell Steven that the only way to win is to become stevenzilla and they fight, but steven realising what he has become will use a time travel device to bring them before the fight and try to convince the villain to talk instead of fight, this time wearing him down instead of fighting him.  In the end it takes a fusion who although believes in perfection convinces the villain that if every porkchop was perfect they wouldn't have hotdogs, and even though historically innacurate would make the phrase itself a hotdog, and so with this understanding (and a better appreciation of who he is as opposed to living up to society's standards), the villain leaves them be. </p>

<p>So this is how I see Pink's upbringing: </p><p>At first, Pink had no problem accepting the diamonds as her family.  From what we saw of the flashback on jungle moon, although she resembled a full grown woman she was mentally a child at that point; cheerful, curious, wanting to use the device the grown up was using yet having not idea how to actually use it (just pressing buttons randomly), and throwing a tantrum when angry. </p><p>Originally, Pink just expressed her emotions no matter how destructive she could be, until after one said tantrum she unintentionally hit her pearl, who at that point was her closest friend.  After that, not only could her damage not be fixed but she was turned into White's pearl, taking away her friend and the consquences of her action plain for her to see.  so after this she learnt to control her temper and keep her feelings secret. </p><p>although she later had spinel, by the time she had her own colony, she treated spinel as if she was just a toy with no feelings of her own, not to mention finding her aggravating at times, so she had no problem just abandoning her in the garden. </p><p>while running the colony (Having never actually being down there at first), pearl unintentinonally gave her the idea of going down to earth in disguise.  At this point in her life, pink was rather sheltered, having no idea about what colonisiation really does to a planet, thinking that they were creating life from nothing rather than taking life. </p><p>when she explores the planet, she instantly falls in love with it, and when she sees the family of happy humans, she becomes concerned.  At this point, the kindergarten, once a source of happiness, appears rather lifeless compared to earth, and she fully understands the repurcussions of colonisation.  At first she tries to convince blue and yellow for her to give up the colony, but they refuse.  IT can be said at that point, only drastic action could be taken, but at this stage Pink was mentally a teenager, rebelling against her loveless family.   </p><p>At first, she fought for the earth, but after meeting garnet it inspires her to fight for gems as well. </p><p>Aside from Pearl, Rose never told anyone who she really was, because how could they accept that she was the 'tyrant', they were fighting against.  she didn't even like pink. </p><p>Rose was so dedicated to preserving life, even those of her enemies (Who were of course her own gems as well), that she had a weapon that couldn't shatter a gem.  When bismuth offered her the breaking point, it was against everything she believed in, and would harm her.  When they fought, because they disagreed, Rose bubbled her away, and didn't tell anyone. </p><p>As the war drags on, pink again tries to convince blue and yellow to abandon earth, but they still refuse, with blue saying as long as she's on earth, the colony will continue to exist.  So once again Rose comes to the visible only conclusion.  believing that her family never actually cared for her, she decides to fake her death, with pearl her accomplice, having no idea the repurcussions this would have on her, and being shocked when it turned out her family did care for her when they attacked earth. </p><p>At this point Rose still didn't tell Garnet or Amethyst who she really was, how could she, as well as wanting to leave pink behind her. </p>

<p>"I do feel that the fact that Rose’s portrait still has pride of place in the Beach House, shows that Steven, whilst accepting and dealing with all the baggage he inherited, can still see the good within his mother as well, and understands that she had her own baggage to deal with and never truly did." </p><p>

<p>Also, in that podcast ian never said Rose was a villain, he just said he liked the trope of a villain mistreating their subordinate (Which influenced the bismuth situation). </p>

<p>Ok, so I read that part about Pink lashing at pink pearl, and it reminded me of a post I saw of pink punching pink pearl, and of what was originally written in the episode volleyball on the wiki, and I have to ask, is that what some fans think happened?  Because that's not what happened.  From how pink pearl described it and Pink, to her reaction to Steven's own tantrum in the same episode, to an image that rebecca drew of pink covering her mouth thinking 'don't break this one', it seems that when Pink had her destructive tantrum over being rejected a colony, Pink Pearl was caught in the blast by being too near her.  So no, Pink didn't direct her anger at Pink Pearl.  She just didn't consider how her destructive tantrums affected those around her until it was too late. </p><p>

Also about that apart about Blue and yellow visiting places that reminded them of Pink, from what we saw of spinel's backstory no one had come to the garden since pink abandoned her, and we saw that Yellow was not the type to linger around the places that reminded her of pink.  rather, she preferred to destroy them. </p><p>

I'm thinking of maybe writing my own interpretation of rose's story. </p>

I'm not the only one who say's she's a villain.  Both Rebecca Sugar and Ian Jones-Quarty have stated that she's a villain and a really awful person in this podcast.  Skip ahead to the 10:00 minute mark to hear it.  You don't have to take my word for it.  <p>As for Pink realizing her invasion would destroy the Earth, how would she not realize it?  She was a Diamond.  She was there when Yellow Diamond ordered the destruction of organic life on the Jungle Moon planet.  Pink was well aware of what getting her own colony would mean yet she pestered the other Diamonds for a colony anyway.  If life was so precious to her why would she want a colony at all?  She certainly appeared to have no problem killing both gems and humans in a fake thousand year war against herself.  Then she faked her own death in that war.  What did she think the other Diamonds would do in response to that?  She's was a Diamond herself so she knew the death of a Diamond would call down the full wrath of the Empire.  Peridot even pointed out how Pink's little plan accomplished absolutely nothing other than sealing Earth's fate. </p><p>And when all the damage had been done she did nothing to atone for any of it.  She continued to lie to the surviving Crystal Gems about everything right up to the day of her death.  She left nothing behind for them or Steven explaining the truth of everything they went through.  </p><p>And let's not forget Spinel and Pink Pearl. </p> </div> <p>They never said she was a villain.  Rebecca did say that she an awful person though, and Ian said how he liked the trope of a villain mistreating their subordinate.  At best, rebecca described rose as a morally grey character. </p><p>Pink may have been on the planet, but she seemed to have no idea as to what was actually happening or the process. </p><p>She may have wanted a colony, but she seemed to have no idea about the actual consequences of what colony building does to a planet. </p><p>no problem with humans dying?  Well then, I guess she should have just let the colonizing process continue so that humans became extinct.  And it's also worth remembering that the reason she got gems involved (when first going it alone with PEarl) was to free them as well. </p><p>as with faking her death, it was made clear that the only way to end the war and free the earth was if pink diamond was to disappear.  It also seemed in a single pale rose that Rose didn't think the diamonds truly cared about her, so she had no idea their they would have reacted the way they did. </p><p>And peridot never said that her actions sealed the earth's fate, only that it delayed what she thought was the inevitable. </p><p>And what do you mean she didn't do anything to atone for it?  What about collecting the corrupted?  Garnet even mentioned that Rose tried to heal them.  What more could she have done?   </p><p>As for continuing to lie to Garnet and Amethyst, I'm sure that would have been an interesting conversation if she ever told the truth, especially from what we saw their reactions were and their treatment of Rose's memory. </p><p>But yes, she should have told STeven at least the truth, or at least given him some video that explained everything, but probably thought it was best to leave the past buried.  And also would have thought that her son would have despised her for who she was and what she did. </p><p>But yeah, what she did to SPinel was the least excusable.  I don't think she meant to hurt Spinel though, it just never occurred to her that she had her own feelings.  Course that doesn't excuse what she did. </p><p>As for Pink Pearl, it's worth remembering that Pink didn't intentionally hurt her, and that experience effected her so much that it changed her personality.  And if you think that Pink still shouldn't be forgiven for that, just remember that Steven ended up doing far worst to a gem during his pink phase (cough! Jasper), yet I'm sure that most fans have forgiven him. </p>
