Bluebird Azurite, at your service! |
” |
—"Bluebird" |
Bluebird Azurite, or Bluebird for short, is the unaligned fusion of Aquamarine and "Eyeball" Ruby. She made her debut in the episode of the same name.
Appearance[]
Bluebird is the shortest fusion in the franchise, being similar, albeit slightly larger than her component gems. She has an azure complexion with red and mint patches, a single navy blue eye and burgundy hair stylized in a bowl cut. She has six limbs, consisting of two arms and four legs. Her gemstones are embedded in her left eye and cheek respectively.
She dons informal clothing; a long-sleeved suit that is red on the right and teal on the left, a white collar and a blue tie. She also wears pants that match with said tie and four burgundy boots.
Personality[]
At first, Bluebird seems to be very kind and sweet, offering Steven food and hanging out with other Gems even though she was a bit of a prankster. Steven assumed Bluebird was up to no good after recognizing the placement of her individual gemstones and his assumptions were later proven to be true: she revealed herself as very cruel when she dangled Steven's father Greg off the roof of the Beach House just so she could get his attention. She later attacked Steven without hesitation, showing how powerful her components' grudge towards him was. Despite this ferocity, she displayed cowardice when the other Crystal Gems caught her trying to kill Steven and she attempted to convince them otherwise, only for them to fuse into Alexandrite and forcefully separate her.
History[]
Bluebird was brought about due to the frustration felt by Aquamarine and "Eyeball" once Era 3 commenced. Both Gems had felt they had contributed to stopping the enemy, Rose Quartz, in the events of "The Trial," but once the news about Rose Quartz actually being Pink Diamond, and Steven being his own separate entity came to Homeworld's attention, Steven was let off the hook in their minds. To Aquamarine and "Eyeball", Homeworld was praising the enemy and disregarding the struggles they went through to bring justice, and because of this, in addition to hating Steven's morals, the two met each other and decided to fuse in order to take care of him together.
"Bluebird"[]
After Steven invites Gems from across the universe to come to Little Homeschool to learn the ways of Era 3, Bluebird decides to accept the invitation as the perfect time to strike unexpectedly. She started out with tame, petty pranks against Steven in order to annoy and taunt him, such as leaving a roll of toilet paper on top of his car, and offering him a dish of grass, peanut butter, and clams. But throughout this, Bluebird kept an innocent demeanor to keep suspicion low, since the Crystal Gems knew she was a fusion of Aquamarine and "Eyeball".
Bluebird also hangs out with the Crystal Gems to gain their trust, even Greg. However, one morning, Steven finds Bluebird holding Greg off of the edge of the Beach House, where she unfuses only for Aquamarine and "Eyeball" to give Steven numerous demands such as destroying his house, poofing the Crystal Gems, and burning Little Homeworld to the ground, so that Greg may be spared. Greg cuts his hair off in order to save himself, causing Steven to transform into his pink state to fight Aquamarine and "Eyeball".
The two decide that they must become Bluebird again to stop Steven, but fail to fuse due to how incompatible they are with each other. However, once Steven offers them reasons to fuse, such as love and peace, the two realize they hate Steven's sense of morality which causes Bluebird to emerge again, summoning a sword and ruthlessly attacking him. The Crystal Gems witness the fight, fuse into Alexandrite, and squashes Bluebird with one hand. Though Bluebird does not reappear, Aquamarine and "Eyeball" make it clear to Steven that they will continue to be roaming the universe hating him as they flee.
Abilities[]
Bluebird Azurite possesses standard Gem abilities: bubbling, shapeshifting, fusion, regeneration, agelessness, gravity shifting, weapon-Summoning, photokinesis, gem storage, and superhuman strength/durability. Her components generally fuse when they feel a mutual hatred towards Steven.
Skillset[]
- Cutlass Proficiency: Bluebird Azurite can summon an ice cutlass, which she uses to fight. She pulls it out of "Eyeball"'s gemstone indicating the weapon is an enhanced form of "Eyeball"'s chisel knife. So far Bluebird is shown to be very proficient in using her weapon, easily attacking Steven multiple times with it.
Natural Abilities[]
- Enhanced Strength: She is shown to have incredible strength when holding Greg by his foot on the roof, despite her size.
- Enhanced Durability: Bluebird proved to be very durable, as she since she withstood Steven's attacks, only ever poofing when Alexandrite attacked her.
- Enhanced Speed: After pulling pranks, Bluebird was never found likely due to her wings. When she drove Greg's Van into the house, the Warp Pad was heard activating and tires screeching, yet Bluebird was already outside by the time Steven had gone to investigate from his bathroom.
Unique Abilities[]
- Hydrokinesis: Bluebird has been shown to have slight control over water and its solid form, ice, though the extent of this ability is unknown.
- Cryokinesis: Additionally, she can shoot ice projectiles from her sword, which shift into copies of the sword that generate icy spikes upon hitting a target.
- Water Wings: An ability from Aquamarine, she can summon four water wings on her back to fly. In some shots, they are noticeably larger and sharper like those of a bluebird, hence her name.
Relationships[]
Crystal Gems[]

Now, if it isn't my favorite trio. |

—Bluebird Azurite, "Bluebird" |
Bluebird fakes being nice to the Crystal Gems, which convinces them to trust her. When Bluebird reveals her true colors, Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl fuse into Alexandrite and crush her.
Steven Universe[]
“ |
DIE! DIE! DIE! DIE! DIE! DIE! |
” |
—Bluebird Azurite, "Bluebird" |
Bluebird holds a mutual hatred for Steven since her components fused to get revenge on him due to his changing of Homeworld causing her components to be cast out by the rest of their society. While she initially pulled pranks on him, she eventually battered him relentlessly in a fight out of anger towards his actions.
Greg Universe[]
Bluebird is originally seen watching a horror movie and having fun with Greg. However, she was only trying to lure everyone into trusting her and later using Greg as bait for Steven while her components forced him to cut his hair.
Aquamarine and "Eyeball"[]
“ |
Tsk, tsk, tsk. You guys fused just because you hate me, didn't you? |
” |
—Steven Universe, "Bluebird" |
Bluebird's fusion components. They both dislike each other, due to "Eyeball" being aggressive and Aquamarine being bossy. They can only fuse into Bluebird once they agree on their mutual hatred of Steven. Aquamarine is likely the one in control during Bluebird's polite acts while "Eyeball" is likely responsible for Bluebird's violent acts.

Trivia[]
- The patches on Bluebird's body are reminiscent of multicolored spots on real-world bluebird azurite.[1]
- Bluebird and Garnet are both fusions that have a Ruby with a high-ranking short blue gem as partners (Sapphire for Garnet, and Aquamarine for Bluebird).
- Bluebird is the last new fusion introduced in the entire Steven Universe franchise.
- Bluebird is the second fusion to have only one eye after Mega Pearl.
- Coincidentally, both of them lack a left eye; Bluebird through "Eyeball"'s gemstone and Mega Pearl through Pink Pearl's scarring.
- While Bluebird has only one visible eye, much like her component Ruby, her vision appears to be unaffected.
- While many fusions are shown with extra arms Bluebird is the second non-corrupted fusion with extra legs, the first being Fluorite.
- Malachite, while not truly possessing extra legs possesses extra arms functioning as legs.
- Bluebird is shown to share similarities with Malachite. This may be a reference to bluebird azurite in real-life containing malachite with them and cuprite all being copper oxide minerals which often grow together.
- Zebra Jasper possesses extra legs but their presence may stem from corruption rather than the fusion itself.
- Malachite, while not truly possessing extra legs possesses extra arms functioning as legs.
- Bluebird is one of the only antagonists to not be redeemed.
