I can still remember the day my sister asked me to watch SU's "first two-parter" with her. And, man, was I tense all during Mirror Gem. I was like, "Steven? What is in there? Why is it saying you're its friend? This is concerning!!"
And then Lapis came out, and I'm like, "Wait, so who's this chick?. . . Aw, she fell over. That was sad." It was the first time we discovered the Crystal Gems weren't the last of their kind.
I remember thinking that Lapis didn't look or sound scary, but also I knew that didn't necessarily mean anything. . . under that cute and innocent exterior, she could have easily been a monster. And even though she lashed out seconds later, what really struck me was the pain I heard in her voice.
By the end of "Ocean Gem," I remember concluding she wasn't a monster, after all. She had hurt people, but she hadn't enjoyed doing it, and she stopped as soon as she was given a viable alternative. Her cuteness didn't tell the whole story, but it wasn't deceptive either.
My writer's mind took note of the fact that she was an intriguing and sympathetic character. I didn't know I loved her until Jailbreak ripped my heart out.
And the rest is kind of history.
Lapis has been...and always will be, one of my favourite characters of Steven Universe TT_TT
I'll admit Lapis is one of the reason I started watching Steven Universe along side Peridot.
I've wrote the full details here if your intersted. https://steven-universe.fandom.com/wiki/Thread:913863
Lapis Lazuli is the best.
Agreed TT_TT
I loved Lapis in Same Old World, but the episodes after that were just meh to me. They should have made her and Peridot move to the Crystal Temple to live and interact more with the gems. I'm glad Lapis herself destroyed that cursed barn in Reunited.
I'm okay with them not living in the temple since Little Homeworld is just a short warp away. But yes, Lapis needed more interactions with other Gems.
At least as my thread proves, she's no longer afraid to show her emotions.
I meant during the events of the barn, she and Peridot should have moved to the Temple.
I agree with that.
Oh I see. Yes I agree, though I think they didn't do that so they can keep the focus on the four main characters.
Yeah, I really wanted to see them take Lapis back to the temple and love on her for a bit while she got back on her feet. It's pretty obvious that Peridot took care of that off-screen, but I would have preferred to watch it happen.
