Ok, now that i've gathered enough information and finished reading many fan theories regarding the infamous scene where Pearl covers her mouth, i guess it's time for me to share my own point of view:
- First of all, i must say that even though most theories claiming that Pearl couldn't reveal anything due to some kind of mind control or sealing technique forced on her by White Diamond are amazingly well-thought and make lot of sense if you think about it, i believe sometimes we need to take other things into consideration as well.
Why am i saying this? Ok, let's take a look at the first and most important subject of this debate - the scene itself:
- If you listen carefully, you will notice that Pearl said "I (ai) two times before abruptly covering her mouth with her own hand, which means that both phonetically and verbally, the most plausible conjugation here would be "I" from I Did rather than "I" from I Am/I'm/I Was, as it would have a different pace and entonation.
That being said, i'm personally convinced that Pearl was about to reveal something that she did in the past, not what she used to be. But my argument doesn't end here. Now we should talk about the context and relevancy of that scene and how Steven would react to it, compared to us:
- Let's say Pearl revealed that she used to be White Diamond's Pearl. For us, that would be an amazing statement and the end of one of the show's biggest mysteries, but what does it mean for Steven, the character?
Well...i don't believe that such a thing would have the same effect on him ("There's another Diamond? Wow, i guess that's why you're mostly white"). Maybe he wouldn't even care about it, or try not to care.
- The point is, for Pearl to remain silent about this subject, it must be something BIG. Something that would force Steven to stop the paranoia over Connie and turn his head back to Pearl, confused and shocked about what she just said, and i don't think that knowing whom she belonged to would be a shocking revelation for both him and the audience.
Ok ok, some of you guys might be thinking "oh here's another simple-minded person going for the most obvious line of thought...tsc tsc tsc"... But what if the supposed participation of Pearl in Pink Diamond's demise is just the tip of the iceberg?
- Isn't weird how BOTH Yellow Diamond and Pearl behave in a suspicious manner everytime they're confronted about Pink Diamond? Or when Pink Diamond is the subject in general? Why did Garnet herself told Steven his mother was the killer? (does Garnet actually know the truth, or she has been lied to, like the others?) Who was the real Rose Quartz? Is there some kind of conspiracy here?
- What if Pearl's hypothetical "forced silence" wasn't only the result of mind control techniques perpetrated by her supposed original owner, but also some kind of "pact" between her, Rose, Yellow and White (if Garnet and Blue Diamond aren't included)?
What's wrong with her past anyways? Why it's so shady and full of mysteries?
I know i'm pulling out a Ronaldo, but maybe the obvious thing doesn't lead to an obvious revelation, but to something we could never...ever imagine.
