This theme uses the exact same bass instrument from the first game's boss theme, although this theme is notably more intense and lively, thanks to the quicker tempo and acoustic drum kit.
A chorused sawtooth lead is soon joined by a piano and then some additional chiptune square-waves. These instruments later go on to play a melody that is strikingly similar to "We Are the Crystal Gems", until returning to the previous form, with a heavy guitar accompanied by some chords played on a piano's bass notes. The Crystal Gems melody is eventually repeated one more time, but with the suprising inclusion of a viola section. The tone of these violas are light, but this contrasts heavily with the darker melody of the music (even the progression played by the violas is moody), perhaps as an illusion to the hope that lies within the player; the tough battle that must be won.
Interestingly, additional variations of the music can play with added guitar and/or ukulele instrumental lines, depending on whether or not Greg or Steven are playing their instruments during their attack. The more light-hearted chords played on Steven's ukulele (along with the light timbres and themes that are normally associated with ukuleles), do not perfectly match the chords of the track, which causes it to stand outside the rest of the instruments. This is unlike Greg's mix, which can be deemed much more fitting.
