"Bubbling" is the process wherein a Gem encases a specific object inside a bubble via contact or energy projection, and either takes it with them or transfers it to a different location. Items and gems that are bubbled remain inactive until released.

Process

The Gem picks an object that they desire to encase inside the bubble, and they use energy in order to create a bubble that can surround the object. This bubble is able to float independently from its creator. The majority of bubbles are seen in the Crystal Temple inside The Burning Room that only Garnet is allowed inside of. This is due to the transferring ability that is the second phase of bubbling. After bubbling a gem, the holder can either keep it in their possession or send it to a different location via physical contact. Garnet is seen poking the bubble, Pearl often hugs or slides her hands over the bubble, and Steven often bops the surface of the bubble. As mentioned earlier the bubbled gems are transported to The Burning Room.

The truth is, Rose Quartz had tried to use her powers to save these monsters too, but she was never able to heal them.

Garnet, "Monster Buddies"

Objective

The original objective of bubbling was inspired by Rose Quartz. She loved those around her, even the monsters and wished to restore them to their human constructs. Rose Quartz and Steven, alike, tried to heal these monsters and corrupted gems but failed in many attempts. Not even her healing tears were able to break the curse of gem corruption. So, until they can find a way, they have to subdue them, contain them. It's the best they can do for them for now. It is currently unknown if Homeworld has found a way to heal broken or corrupted gems.

Trivia

  • It is unknown if all gems possess the ability to bubble objects.
  • Garnet is able to bubble gems with and without her gauntlets which implies that gems don't always need physical contact to bubble gems.
  • Garnet is the only gem seen levitating a gem before bubbling.
    • This implies that it's an ability specific to her.
  • Amethyst is the only Crystal Gem (aside from Rose Quartz) who is not seen bubbling gems in the show. However, because there are various purple bubbles visible in The Burning Room, it can be assumed she has bubbled gems in the past.
