Censorship in Foreign Countries

Many Steven Universe episodes have been censored in foreign adaptations. Censorship has been reported in Latin America, Brazil, Spain, Malaysia, Philippines, Romania, Hungary, Italy, Turkey, Russia, Bulgaria, Poland, Australia, Taiwan, Middle East, Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Portugal, France, Indonesia, Ireland and the United Kingdom. These edits mainly occur due to the television content guidelines differing from the United States, and often include removing scenes or lines that may be unsuitable for younger viewers. Cultural differences are also another common reason episodes might get censored. Most censored versions in regions controlled by Turner EMEA use a master "foreign" edit, with broadcasts in some countries further shortening these already edited versions (e.g. Russia and Bulgaria).

Latin America

"Frybo"

The scene where Steven and Peedee find Frybo force-feeding customers French fries; Mr. Smiley pleads for mercy, and Frybo fills his mouth with more French fries was all cut.
The scene where Steven runs into Frybo while nude, and his butt is shown was cut.
- The butt-related dialogue was also removed.
Frybo's sound when Steven takes the shard out of him was muted.

"Island Adventure"

Lars' and Sadie's exaggerated kiss, specifically the back-rubbing and moaning sounds, were removed. Only Lars' lips touching Sadie's is seen before the scene cuts off.
Sadie forcefully pushing the sharpened stick deeper into the Invisible Gem Monster when she realizes it didn't die from her initial stabs was cut.
The sound when Sadie is hunting fish was muted.

"Watermelon Steven"

The scene where Garnet kicks the Watermelon Steven, right after when she says "Come on!" was cut.
The scene where Garnet punches two watermelons and kicks one was cut.

"The Return"

Most of the scene where Garnet is affected by the Gem Destabilizer was cut, namely right after the initial shock. Pearl and Amethyst are shown gasping, then it cuts directly to the frame where the dust explosion begins.
- In the flashback at "Full Disclosure", however, the scene is shown unaltered.

"Friend Ship"

The scene when Pearl slashes Holo-Peridot was shortened so she is only heard laughing, without calling Pearl an "idiot".

Philippines

"So Many Birthdays"

Teen Steven's line, "but a boy on the cusp of manhood can't spend the whole day whackering" was cut.

"Joking Victim"

When Sadie says, "he let me be his player 2, and we spent the whole night together", the part about spending the whole night together was cut.

"Island Adventure"

Starting 2016, the scene where Sadie and Lars cuddle in their sleep was censored.
Sadie and Lars kissing was cut, instead, it was a replay of Lars crying. (Although this scene was cut, the kissing and moaning sounds are still heard).
Sadie's line, "you kissed me on the mouth!" along with Lars' line, "no, I didn't" was cut.
Sadie pushing the stick deeper into the Invisible Gem Monster was cut.

"Warp Tour"

Amethyst's line, "heh, Steven Jr.'s been busy" was muted.
Steven's line, "and now I'm gonna die" was muted.

"Garnet's Universe"

The part when Garnet catches Hoppy's sword when she swings it at her, was cut.
The part where Garnet punched the Foxman in his stomach, was cut.

"Watermelon Steven"

The scene where Garnet unleashes her rocket gauntlets was cut (although it was not cut in the episode "Reformed").

"Lion 3: Straight to Video"

The part when Dogcopter ate the chess piece was cut. Instead, it showed a replay of the scene when Dogcopter says that he won the game.

"Alone Together"

When Stevonnie dances for the first time, the part of the dance where they swing their upper body was cut.
When Kevin entered the disco ball, the part where he observed Stevonnie was shortened so that it looked like he did not observe them from top to bottom.
Kevin Pelvic-thrusting was cut.
Kevin's line, "not tonight. Hey baby, why'd you leave me on the dance floor?" was shortened to "Baby, why'd you leave me on the dance floor?"

"Maximum Capacity"

The part where the camera panned to the book Passions of Xanxor, was cut.
The scene were Lil' Butler kisses Mr. Money was cut.

"The Return"

When Steven asked Greg to turn the van around, the part where he hits the dashboard was cut. Instead, it was a replay of Steven starting to get mad, before he smashed the dashboard.
The part where Garnet's arms fall off after getting hit by the destabilizer and Pearl and Amethyst's reaction to it was cut.

"Jail Break"

The part where Garnet smashes Jasper's lens part of her Crash Helmet, was changed to a black background with stars flying out instead of her visor breaking, a second of the song was also cut due to this.

"Onion Friend"

Some of Vidalia's lines from Onion's birth video was cut.

"Catch and Release"

The scene where Peridot questions if a towel is a weapon and Steven explaining how it works while rolling it up was cut.

"Back to the Barn"

The scene where Pearl punches Peridot in the face was cut.

"Message Received"

This episode was not aired in the Philippines for unknown reasons.

"The New Lars"

Jenny's line, "that is so unlike you!" was cut.

Southeast Asia (Malaysia, Singapore & Thailand)

"So Many Birthdays"

Teen Steven's line, "but a boy on the cusp of manhood can't spend the whole day whackering" was cut.

"Joking Victim"

When Sadie says:,"he let me be his player 2, and we spent the whole night together", the part about spending the whole night together was cut.

"Island Adventure"

Scenes of Lars and Steven hugging were cut.
The entire kissing scene between Lars and Sadie was cut.

"Warp Tour"

Amethyst's line, "heh, Steven Jr.'s been busy" was muted.

"Lion 3: Straight to Video"

The part when Dogcopter ate the chess piece was cut. Instead, it was a replay of the scene when Dogcopter says that he won the game.

"Maximum Capacity"

The scene when Steven is looking at Greg's book collection and sees the book Passions of Xanxor and when Greg mentions and picks up the book was edited. Instead, the camera does not pan.
The scene in the "Li'l Butler Theme" when Li'l Butler kisses Mr. Money was cut.

"The Return"

The scene when Steven punches the dashboard in Greg's van was edited.
The scene when Garnet's arm disconnects from her body due to the Gem Destabilizer and Pearl and Amethyst's reactions was cut.
The scene when Jasper head-butts Steven was edited with the headbutt stars.

"Jail Break"

The part where Garnet breaks Jasper's crash helmet visor is replaced with the headbutt stars in The Return. A second of the song was also cut due to this.
In the scene where Sapphire and Ruby are hugging each other, Sapphire and Ruby's kiss were cut.

"Keystone Motel"

The part with Ruby and Sapphire kissing was replaced with a repeat of Ruby picking up Sapphire from a few seconds earlier.

"Onion Friend"

Some of Vidalia's lines from Onion's birth video were cut.

"Catch and Release"

The scene where Peridot questions if a towel is a weapon and Steven explaining it while rolling it up was cut.

"Back to the Barn"

Pearl punching Peridot in the face was censored. The punch was replaced with an extended shot of the rest of the gems watching.

"Hit the Diamond"

When Ruby and Sapphire were, quoted "flirting", Lapis' mouth was edited and her voice was cut.
The scene where Sapphire said, "but all I want to look at is you" while trying to hit the ball was cut.

"Mr. Greg"

The phrase, "I know your feeling about Rose" in the song Both of You was replaced by "kenapa tak tegur sapa?" ("why not say hello?").

Italy

"Frybo"

Steven and his squad of clothes' arrival was simplified. The Italian version cuts from Pearl uttering "where?" ("dove?") to Steven ordering "attack!" ("all'attacco!") several shots later, excluding Steven's line, "your move, Frybo" and a shot of Frybo charging.

"Steven's Lion"

Ronaldo's line, "Steven's pregnant?!" and spit take were removed with Steven's line, "I don't think so."
Ronaldo saying, "I bet you're not even pregnant" was muted. However, his mouth can still be seen to move.

"Arcade Mania"

Every time Steven says "Meat Beat Mania" were removed.

"So Many Birthdays"

All uses of the word "die" were changed.

"Steven and the Stevens"

The last part of the song "Steven and the Crystal Gems", where Steven sings, "by watching myself die", has been changed to "by watching my self fade" ("g'ardandomi svanir").

"Island Adventure"

The entire scene of Lars and Sadie's exaggerated kiss, specifically the back-rubbing and moaning sounds, were removed.
Steven's line, "use your fish murdering skills" was cut.
Lars and Sadie's fist bump and hug scene was cut from the song "Be Wherever You Are".

"Steven the Sword Fighter"

The scene where Pearl drops her sword when she gets stabbed by Holo-Pearl was cut (also from Steven's flashbacks).

"Coach Steven"

Steven saying, "you can beat up Lars, and you don't have to starve to death if Sadie divorces you!" followed by Lars' line, "we're not MARRIED!!" was cut.

"Joking Victim"

The shots containing the lyrics "take both hands! Push below the diaphragm!" during the Big Donut training videotape were removed, as well as Steven performing the Heimlich maneuver on Lars later on the episode.

"Monster Buddies"

Garnet kicking the Centipeetle in the ice cave was cut.
The Centipeetle Mother getting crushed under the stalactite, and the closeups of it closing its mouth and its gem dimming was cut.

"Horror Club"

Lars referring to Ronaldo as a "social napalm" was cut.
Steven saying, "I think you can stop being such a dink to Ronaldo" was cut.

"Story for Steven"

Rose's line, "... and I really wanna play with you" was cut.

"The Message"

Pearl's line, "I can't believe my flipping eyes!" along with Garnet's line, "everyone, listen up!" were cut.

"The Return"

In the scene where Garnet was poofed, her visor and body snapping and breaking was cut, as well as Amethyst and Pearl screaming, moving straight to her "poof" cloud.

"Jail Break"

When Jasper hits Garnet and when Garnet hits Jasper and smashes her Crash Helmet were replaced by bright flashes of white light (none of the song was cut though).

"Sworn to the Sword"

Two changes were made to the song "Do It for Her".
- Pearl's line, "concentrate! Don't you want him to live?" was changed to "concentrate! Shouldn't you protect him?" ("concentrati! Non dovresti proteggerlo?").
- The line, "when you live for some one you're prepared to die" was changed to "Because you have someone you will fight for" ("perché hai qualcuno per cui lotterai").

"Keeping It Together"

Garnet saying the Earth would become "janked" along with Amethyst's line, "Garnet! That mouth!" were cut.

"We Need To Talk"

The part of Pearl and Rose's fusion dance where their faces close into each other was cut.
The scene where Rainbow Quartz was modelling her way down to kneel in front of Greg was shortened into her kneeling in front of Greg without her modelling her body.
While they are having a heart-to-heart, the part where Rose asks Greg, "Is this torture?" and Greg replying "the worst" has been cut jumping straight to when Rose apologizes to him.

"Friend Ship"

When Peridot fires a barrage of lasers towards the Crystal Gems inside the ancient Gem ship, she repeatedly says "shoo!" ("sciò!") instead of "die!".

"Barn Mates"

When Lapis reminds that she stayed for months in the depths of the ocean to keep Jasper locked with her within' Malachite, the word "tomb" was changed to "prison" ("prigione").

"Hit the Diamond"

When during the baseball game Steven asks what Ruby and Sapphire doing, Lapis answers him saying that they are "playing" rather than "flirting".

"Steven Floats"

During Steven's exaggeratedly pessimistic fantasy about remaining stuck in mid-air and not being able to go to the Big Donut to eat a fresh doughnut, the line "...and then I'll die..." has been changed to "...and for me it will be late..." ("...e per me sarà tardi...")

"Earthlings"

The part where Smoky Quartz kicks Jasper in the face was shortened, with some frames of the precise moment when Jasper gets hit removed.
When corrupted Jasper is stabbed with the metal pole, the part where the camera pans down at the metal sticking out of Jasper, and the shot from the rear, were cut.

Turkey

For unknown reasons, Steven Universe is no longer transmitted in the Turkey.

"Laser Light Cannon"

Garnet's line, "stop that!" along with Pearl's line, "It's no use!" as Amethyst forces Steven onto the light cannon were cut.

"Frybo"

The shot where Steven's butt is visible was cut.

"Island Adventure"

The scene where Sadie and Lars hug during the song "Be Wherever You Are" was shortened, cutting the scene where Lars pushes Steven out of the hug.
The entire kissing scene between Lars and Sadie was cut.
Steven's line, "use your fish murdering skills!" was cut.

"Jail Break"

Sapphire kissing Ruby before their fusion dance was cut.

"We Need To Talk"

This episode was not aired in Turkey, possibly due to romantic themes.

"Cry for Help"

The scene when Garnet and Pearl are close to each other in the fusion dance was cut.
The scene where Pearl and Garnet's faces are close to each other after unfusing for the first time was shortened.
Before fusing for the second time, Garnet's line, "I hope you're ready" and Pearl's line, "you know I am" was cut.
When Sardonyx unfuses for the second time, the scene when Pearl and Garnet's faces were close to each other was cut, and a part of the song was also cut due to this.

"Keystone Motel"

Ruby's line, "I am an eternal flame, baby!" was changed to simply become "I am an eternal flame!"
Ruby and Sapphire making up was severely cut down. Everything from after Ruby says, "I know" right up to Steven covering his eyes was cut.

"Onion Friend"

The entire scene where Onion shows Steven his birth tape was cut (a span of 33 seconds).

"Sadie's Song"

The close-up of Sadie's butt when Sadie is singing along to the radio was cut. This also cuts the line, "they're hypnotised by my way of walking".
The entire scene where Steven performs "Haven't you Noticed I'm a Star" at Beach-a-Palooza in Sadie's clothes was removed. This is a cut of 43 seconds.

"Catch and Release"

Peridot's line, "stop talking!" was cut for unknown reasons.
Peridot's line, "that's right you DIRT BOMBS!" was cut.

"The Answer"

"Something Entirely New" was not dubbed into Turkish. Also, the song was cut down, removing the part where Ruby and Sapphire hum the chorus to "Stronger Than You" together, except for the ending where they fuse again. About 25 seconds were cut.

"Super Watermelon Island"

The part where Alexandrite says "you two should spend some time apart", before shooting the flying to Malachite was cut.

Hungary and Romania

"Frybo"

The part where Steven says, "your move, Frybo" and eats a French fry was cut.

"Steven's Lion"

The part where Ronaldo spits his soda on his laptop, and says, "Steven's pregnant?!" was cut.
Ronaldo saying, "bet you're not even pregnant" was muted, although his mouth can still be seen to move.

"Island Adventure"

The entire scene of Lars and Sadie's exaggerated kiss, specifically the back-rubbing and moaning sounds, were removed.

Russia and Bulgaria

"Gem Glow"

Garnet snapping a Centipeetle in half was cut.
Pearl snapping a Centipeetle's neck and her entire line, "Steven, until you learn to control the powers in your gem, we'll take care of protecting humanity. Okay?" were cut.
Steven throwing up at the end of the episode was cut.

"Frybo"

Steven saying "I wear the pants in this relationship!" is cut.
Steven and his squad of clothes' arrival was simplified. It cuts from Pearl uttering "where?" to Steven ordering "attack!" several shots later, excluding Steven's line, "your move, Frybo" and a shot of Frybo charging.

"Arcade Mania"

"Meat Beat Mania" is written as "Beat Mania".
Every instance of Steven saying "Meat Beat Mania" is cut.

"Joking Victim"

Amethyst yelling, "I don't care!" was cut for unknown reasons.
The amount of train wheels at the end of the song was reduced (probably for time).

"Horror Club"

Rose's line, "... and I really wanna play with you" was cut.
In Bulgaria, the line, "you want one huge woman, when you could have multiple smaller ones" was translated as "you're losing your mind over the ladies in this small town, but they aren't modern".

"The Message"

Pearls line, "I can't believe my flipping eyes!" along with Garnet's line, "everyone, listen up!" were cut.

"The Return"

The episode aired nearly 2 months after it was supposed to be with the following change:

In the scene where Garnet is poofed, her visor and body snapping and breaking was cut, as well as Amethyst and Pearl screaming, moving straight to her "poof" cloud.

"Jail Break"

Jasper punching Garnet's head was replaced with a white flash.

From few months this episode is airing slightly censored. The Lars and Sadie kissing scene is shortened and the moment, where Lars and Sadie are lying on the spoon is still censored (the next scene where Lars covers Sadie, and Steven covers Lars was returned).

The scene where Pearl helplessly drops her sword (also from Steven's flashbacks) was cut.

"Coach Steven"
