Coach Steven is the 20th Episode of Season 1 of Steven Universe.
Synopsis
After seeing Garnet and Amethyst fuse together into the powerful Sugilite, Steven gets determined to become super strong.
Plot
The episode starts with Garnet, Amethyst, Pearl, and Steven in a place that used to be a communication hub for Crystal Gems. But, as Pearl explained, it was now bursting with electromagnetic interferences. Garnet then explained to Steven that it's hurting television, which made Steven have a strong desire to save television. As a joke, Amethyst transforms into a slightly bigger version of Steven, but who is stronger and more muscular, and starts to punch the pillars. Pearl stops Amethyst by telling her that they would need something bigger in order to destroy the whole hub. Then, Garnet strongly suggests that they need Sugilite. Amethyst and Steven start to get excited, while Pearl is shocked. Pearl questions the decision but Garnet explains that they don't need to be careful; they just need to be huge.
Garnet and Amethyst start to synchronize their moves to form into Sugilite, and soon Sugilite is released. She forms her special weapon of a combination of Garnet's Gauntlets and Amethyst's Whip and starts to smash the pillars. As Pearl became very angry, she tells Steven that they're going home. Steven became very disappointed at the suggestion. After Steven got hit with a rock, they quickly ran to the Warp Pad and teleported away, just before a rock destroys it.
Steven goes to the Big Donut to visit Lars and Sadie. Steven is wrapped with bandages and is wearing a pair of sunglasses to cover up the cut he got while at the communication hub. Lars and Sadie start to laugh at how small it is and Lars tells Steven to toughen up and be a man. Ironically, he then struggled to open a can of fish, so Sadie opened it instead. Steven came up with the idea of exercising as a group. He then suggested to go to his dad for a coach.
We then see Greg who built some workout equipment for them to use. He decides to join them with their workout, saying that he has missed out on working out for decades. Steven goes up to his house for get some sweat bands and sees Pearl there. Pearl asks what's going on and Steven says that he wants to get strong like Sugilite.
Pearl goes inside the home and starts to sing In The Real Way while picking up his clothes that he left out. Steven begins the gym with Greg, Sadie, and Lars working out as Steven is singing the song.
The next day, the 3 are up and ready to another day at the gym, but Steven is sore from the workout the day before. He starts to get up, still sore, and Pearl is downstairs questioning where Sugilite is, saying that the Warp Pad is down (because Sugilite threw a rock at it after Pearl and Steven left the hub the day before). Outside, Sugilite is seen coming back by walking in the water. Greg, Sadie, and Lars question what that was (they haven't seen Sugilite until now). Sugilite shouts that she's bored and complained that Pearl left her behind. Pearl then replied, saying that she thought that Sugilite didn't need any help. Sugilite kicks Pearl away, and Pearl says that they've been fused together for too long. Sugilite starts wrecking the gym.
Pearl starts to fight against Sugilite, trying to separate her back to Amethyst and Garnet. She then gives up, right before Sugilite is about to destroy her, saying that she's sorry to Steven, Garnet, and Amethyst, and that she isn't strong enough to protect anybody or do anything. Steven then tells Pearl that he knows that she can take her down and how she always knows what to do. Pearl gets up, ready to take down Sugilite. Pearl throws her spear at Sugilite, but it hit the cliff directly below her and made her fall. Sugilite asks Pearl if she thinks that she could be defeated. She then got separated to Garnet and Amethyst when her weapon falls and hits her on the head. Pearl asks them if they're okay, and Garnet explains how Sugilite overworked their bodies. Garnet then says that Pearl was right. Pearl suddenly became very excited and proud of herself. She then enthusiastically suggested to go on a mission. The episode ends with Amethyst and Garnet saying that they deserved it, Lars questioning what just happened, and Steven shouting: "Drop and give me 20!".
