Gem Weapons

The Crystal Gems summoning their weapons.

Gem Weapons are typically physical weapons summoned from a Gem's gemstone.

Each weapon is highly personalized and unique, being specifically tailored after the tastes and personality of the Gem summoning it to the point where they cease being weapons at all: Rose Quartz and Steven's loving, protective nature is reflected by their shield as well as their phytokinesis and healing abilities. Other examples include Pearl's precision and accuracy represented through her spear and Garnet's gauntlets referencing her courageous personality. The weapons have strong bonds with their users who can easily summon them by pure will alone; this is stable enough to allow Gems to seemingly create copies of their weapons for dual-wielding or ranged attacks. The same bond also results in the weapons vanishing if a Gem's physical form is destroyed and they are forced to retreat into their gemstones. An example is when Jasper used a Gem Destabilizer on Garnet in "The Return" and Garnet's gauntlets vanished along with her.

As seen in "Bismuth", Gem weapons can be upgraded and/or modified by adding components to their base. For example, Garnet's modifications seem to consist of knuckles attached to her gauntlets. They seem to persist and become part of the weapon itself, as the next time Gems summon their weapons they can clearly be seen with upgrades (Amethyst's whip, for example). Summoning upgraded weapons is optional as Amethyst, Garnet and Pearl can summon either version of their weapons after they were upgraded.

Fusion Gems typically wield a combined form of their components' weapons or the separate arsenals of the Gems composing them.

Crystal Gem Weapons

Pearl's Spear

Pearl wields a spear comprised of a glowing blade with a white grip and a cyan, gold and white pommel shaped like a star. The head of the blade spirals down the upper shaft becoming less sharp on the lower shaft. The spear changes lengths. In its regular spear form, it is roughly as tall as Garnet. Whereas, in its wand form, it is only as long as one of her swords.

Pearl trusts in her years of training and concentration when summoning her weapon. Pearl's is the most-summoned weapon out of the Crystal Gems. It is actually quite strong, being able to form Sardonyx's war hammer and cut through hard objects. Pearl is seen dual-wielding her weapon in "Ocean Gem", throwing it in "Giant Woman" and "Coach Steven", and firing projectiles from it in "Watermelon Steven", "On the Run", and "Bismuth".

As of "Bismuth", her spear is upgraded to be able to turn into a trident. However, she is still able to summon her spear without the trident arms. The trident was first used for training after being created in "Bismuth", and again in "Reunited" against Yellow Diamond and Blue Diamond.

Amethyst's Whip

Amethyst bears a multi-tailed dark violet whip able to take on one, two or three tails depending on the task at hand. It has a cross-guard in the form of a lavender star. The lash is dark purple and is divided into three different segments with spiked balls on the ends. Multiple amethyst shards are embedded on the main lash which inflicts additional damage and further restrains the target. Her whip has a purple amethyst as the pommel and the handle itself is purplish gray. She is seen using her one-tailed whip for smaller tasks, her two-tailed whip for regular combat and her three-tailed whip for larger tasks and dual-wielding.

Amethyst summons her weapon with confident nonchalance by putting her hand to her chest and pulling it from her gemstone. Her whip has strong durability and elasticity, being able to support Sugilite's flail and slice through most materials. She is seen summoning her weapon in her palms in "Together Breakfast", using momentum to quickly stretch it in "Friend Ship", and lashing it with extreme speed to create an explosive energy wave in "On the Run".

Amethyst's whip is the least-summoned weapon out of the Crystal Gems as she relies more on her proficiency in shapeshifting to solve her problems. Later in the series, this trend begins to reverse as Amethyst develops self-esteem and becomes more comfortable with her default form.

In "Bismuth", Amethyst's whip is upgraded to summon a spiked ball on each tail of the whip in place of the usual amethyst pieces. However, she is still able to summon her whip without the flail bludgeon attachment. The flail is first used for training after being created in "Bismuth", in "Earthlings" against Jasper and "Reunited" against Blue Diamond and Yellow Diamond.

Steven wields his mother's spiraled pink shield. The spiral is decorated with light pink thorns and its center symbol is shaped like a rose. When struck it appears to generate a sound wave that negates Gem magic, as it disrupts Lapis Lazuli's Water Clones in "Ocean Gem" and Pearl's holograms in "Sworn to the Sword". He is capable of summoning it in larger sizes and repeatedly in a short space of time; however, as he is still a novice compared to the other Crystal Gems this can take a noticeable toll on him.

In "The Return", Steven is able to conjure a larger shield which successfully deflects the Gem Warship's laser. However, summoning the larger shield drains Steven's energy, enough to force him to his knees and nearly rendering him unconscious.

In "Sworn to the Sword" Steven has greater control over the shield, expanding it to take on multiple attacks without noticeable fatigue. It was also shown that the shield can act as an offensive weapon if used correctly. The shield was capable of cutting through many Holo-Pearls and even releasing concussive shockwaves to knock away several at a time.

In "Friend Ship", Steven was shown to have gained mastery with his shield summoning the larger variant to stop a rock from hitting Garnet. He later summoned it again in its smaller variant throwing it to momentarily stun Peridot. However, after summoning the larger variant to provide cover Steven begins to show signs of fatigue and exhaustion previously observed in "The Return".

In "The Test", Pearl states that one of Steven's greatest accomplishments is being able to summon his mother's shield. However, he is usually seen summoning a pink bubble for protection as he first did in "Bubble Buddies".

In "Crack the Whip", Stevonnie demonstrates the ability to summon and utilize the shield as well and uses it together with Rose's Sword to fight Jasper. They manage to successfully block and repel her helmet-enhanced headbutt, then throw the shield as a distraction in order to strike her on the head with enough force to poof the Snow Monster.

In "Bismuth", Steven casually summons his shield to show it to Bismuth indicating he has much better control of his ability to summon his weapon.

In "Change Your Mind", Steven's disembodied gemstone summons both a shield and bubble to surround him. This shield is markedly different in appearance - it is made of multiple geometric panels (shown are triangles and pentagons) which disappear individually. Rather than round with a rose-and-thorns design these panels are unadorned. The shield is also tinted in Pink Diamond's color rather than Rose's. It may be possible that Pink Diamond changed the default appearance of her shield as she did her own form after becoming Rose; this may be her "original" shield. White Diamond states, "Don't you raise your shield at me", though it is unclear if she means Pink Diamond or Steven. Its simplified appearance may also reflect Pink Steven's incomplete nature and devotion to reuniting with his other half.

Ruby's Gauntlet

Ruby is shown wielding a small amaranth-purple gauntlet that has a darker maroon stripe on the shaft's upper half with a pinkish-red glove. While similar in design to Garnet's gauntlets it appears smaller and does not have the same motif, lacking the knuckles Garnet's gauntlets feature. Ruby's gauntlet has mitten-shaped finger placements. Ruby is capable of putting a great deal of force behind it to smash a table when angry in "Keystone Motel".

Jasper's weapon is an orange helmet with a diamond-shaped extension on the front and a visor to protect her eyes and gemstone. Like Rose Quartz she wields an object for defense but uses it primarily for an offense. When she uses her helmet she often charges at or headbutts opponents.

As shown in "Fragments" the helmet now has axe-like horns on each side and the extension is pointed with no visor.

Holly Blue Agate's Electric Whip

Holly Blue Agate's weapon is a light-blue stockwhip with electricity coursing through it. The handle is a dark violet-blue adorned with a holly blue agate guard and lighter violet-blue pommel. She is proficient enough with it to cast the lash in a straight line. However, when the lash is cut the electric current stops allowing it to be handled safely as seen in "That Will Be All".

"Eyeball's weapon is a crimson and maroon flat-ended chisel knife with the top forming a triangle. "Eyeball" is also able to summon the shiv's hilt out of her gemstone like how Pearl and Amethyst summon the hilts of their weapons.

Topazes' Maces

Both Topazes' weapons are short one-headed mace variants. The maces are yellow, crystalline in appearance and have a brown hilt. Both Topazes are shown to be very proficient with their weapons, spinning them very fast to build momentum before impact and using their strength to break through something as strong as Steven's bubble. When fused they can manifest both maces as a double-headed variant changing their combat style to catch opponents off-guard. Two Topazes in "Familiar" who guard Blue Diamond's Pool Chamber each wield the same maces.

Hessonite's Sword

Hessonite's Sword

Hessonite wields a sword pulled from her gemstone. The sword mostly resembles a straight cutlass or basket-hilt sword. This is seen by the straight blade, the guard that wraps around the hand but not completely covering it unlike that of a basket hilt and the presence of a quillon behind the blade. The sword has an orange-yellow handle, Zircon hair-shape, a red-orange pommel, and the blade is pinkish-white in color.

Blue Quartz Spear

In The Phantom Fable the blue Quartz's weapon is a large-tipped spear and she always holds it in her hand.

Pyrope's Hand Fan

Pyrope can summon a white and pink hand fan which can be used as a boomerang or for delivering gusts of wind.

Garnet usually dual-wields weapons on both hands and they are the only weapons to regenerate with different designs. Her gauntlets cover half her lower arms at normal size and her whole lower arms when she increases their size. Before regenerating, her gauntlets have red and light-red spirals around the entire shafts, red and dark red fingers and contain the same star motif on the tops and bases of the gauntlets.

After regenerating, her gauntlets become less elaborate although larger and more vivid, having dark-red and violet-red stripes on both halves of the gauntlets. The fingers are a lighter violet-red with black fingertips and the bases of her gauntlets no longer have stars instead of being orange. The backs of her palms keep the same yellow star motif albeit with more orange. Her gauntlets have knuckles embedded with light red garnet shards strong enough to break the rock. Garnet's gauntlets are presumably a combination of Ruby's gauntlet and Sapphire's weapon although it is unknown if the latter even has one. Unlike other fusion weapons, it is summoned complete instead of Garnet summoning and fusing both weapons. They also appear complete when being made into other weapons so it is possible Garnet's gauntlets are merely Ruby's gauntlet enhanced by Sapphire's presence similar to how Ruby's presence affects Sapphire's future vision.

She summons it by mentally connecting with the universe's energy and channeling it through her gemstones. This makes her lower arms glow bright red and allows her gauntlets to materialize. When her gauntlets disappear they glow the same color when materializing. Slowly losing its shape it turns into a star that moves back into her gemstone. She can also launch it as a rocket as seen in "Watermelon Steven" (proven to make her hand disappear in "Reformed") and increase their size as shown in "Warp Tour", "Garnet's Universe" and "Reunited".

As of "Bismuth" the gauntlets have been equipped with what appears to be spiked brass knuckles. However, she is still able to summon her gauntlets without the knuckles. The brass knuckles are first used for training after being created in "Bismuth" and in "Reunited" against Blue and Yellow Diamond.

Opal's Recurve Bow

Opal's weapon is an opalescent recurve bow that fires arrows made of light-based energy. The bow is roughly as tall as Opal herself. Opal can summon Amethyst's whip and/ or Pearl's spear at will and fuse both weapons to form her own. Flashes of light appear when she summons it and a gust of the wind that blows Opal's hair back is created upon the impact of the weapons fusing. Pearl's weapon forms the limbs of the bow while the lash and handle of Amethyst's whip become the string and grip respectively. Her arrows are summoned when the bow is drawn back, causing a large explosion and emitting a bright light on impact as well as bearing a resemblance to the blasts emitted by Pearl's spear. The arrows are also capable of splitting into smaller ones and either attacking multiple targets at once or overwhelming a single target. Targets pierced can have their gemstones bubbled by them as well. When fired by Alexandrite, the arrows can take on the silhouettes of Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl, as seen in "Super Watermelon Island".

Sugilite's Flail

Referred to by Steven as a "wrecking-ball-thingy", Sugilite's weapon is a giant flail with a purple ombre design formed out of Garnet's gauntlets and Amethyst's whip. A longer version of Amethyst's whip acts as the supporting lash of the flail and a bigger version of Garnet's gauntlets act as the mace. The mace is adorned with a silver star-shaped ring connecting the bludgeon to the lash of the flail. There are two sugilites on the flail handle, one on the end and one connecting the handle to the whip. The flail is enormous and capable of causing massive destruction when swung. When used properly the flail can smash hundreds of pillars into rubble in minutes. She uses its momentum to destroy large objects and their surface area to disrupt the balance of opponents as seen in "Coach Steven".

Sardonyx's War Hammer

Sardonyx's weapon is a giant hammer formed by fusing Garnet's gauntlets and Pearl's spear. The head of the hammer is light red-orange with both sides shaped like a fist to represent Garnet's gauntlets. They are joined by a grayish-purple rectangle with a black handle going through it. The base of the hammer has a pommel similar to Pearl's spear and the top has a yellow star connecting the head to the handle. It is considerably large as the head is taller than Sardonyx herself. Sardonyx wields her weapon like a bat while utilizing her anatomy manipulation to gain momentum and raise the precision of her strikes. The handle is extremely flexible in order to withstand the impacts of the hammerhead. When the weapon disappears it transforms into a cloud of dragonfly-shaped sparkles that fly away and dissipate. The hammer can be turned into a drill by spinning rapidly as seen in "Friend Ship". In its drill form, it is capable of bursting through thick walls that it and its wielders' components could not break through alone. It is even powerful enough to destabilize a five-Ruby fusion with a single blow.

Smoky Quartz's Yo-Yo

Smoky Quartz's weapon is a yo-yo created by fusing Steven's shield with Amethyst's whip. They can use it to attack from a distance with complicated maneuvers, pull themselves out of the way of enemies and create vortexes of air. They also show the ability to summon and wield up to three yo-yos at once. In "Know Your Fusion" it is shown to take on the form of a helicopter rotor.

Alexandrite's Arsenal

As mentioned in Guide to The Crystal Gems, Alexandrite is capable of wielding all of her components' weapons. In addition she is able to wield other fusion weapons and even transform one weapon into another, seen in "Super Watermelon Island" when turning Sugilite's flail into Sardonyx's hammer. It is unknown if Alexandrite has her own unique weapon.

Topaz's Pugil Mace

Topaz wields a long double-headed mace as a weapon that is a combination of her components' single-headed maces. The heads of the mace are yellow and crystalline in appearance while the hilt of the weapon is brown. A single blow can even render Steven's shield somewhat ineffective.

Rainbow Quartz 2.0's Parasol

Rainbow Quartz 2.0's weapon is a pink parasol with a white star design and a handle created by fusing Steven's shield as the canopy with Pearl's spear as the handle. Rainbow 2.0 can use the parasol to float through the air and can ride it like a broomstick leaving a rainbow-colored trail behind them. They can also animate inanimate objects, such as toys, by tapping them with the tip of the parasol.

Sunstone can summon red gauntlets with pink suction cups attached to them, a combination of Garnet's gauntlets and Steven's shield. The gauntlet portion resembles Ruby's gauntlet more than Garnet's. Sunstone can use the suction cups to scale large surfaces, using them to climb up Pink Diamond's Ship in "Change Your Mind".

Obsidian forms the hilt of their sword by combining Pearl's spear, Rose/Steven's shield, Garnet's gauntlets, and Amethyst's whip; then Obsidian smelts the blade of the sword by opening a third mouth full of lava and sticking the hilt into it. The red-hot sword they pull out is capable of going through nearly anything as it destroys Yellow Diamond and Blue Diamond's ships with seemingly little effort in "Change Your Mind".

Mega Pearl wields a large bladed ribbon wand formed from Pink Pearl's ribbon wand and Pearl's spear capable of cutting through Gem technology. Additionally, the ribbon can turn into a drill that can bore through walls.

Aquamarine's Wand

Light Prisms were given to high-ranking Gems and each contained an army of all visible light spectrums.

Gem Rejuvenators were designed to strip Gems of their memories, essentially resetting them. Spinel was briefly in possession of one.

Trivia

• Most of the Crystal Gems' weapons are based on weapons from the European medieval era: Ruby and Garnet's gauntlets, Amethyst's whip, Pearl's spear, Steven/Rose's shield, Rose's sword, Opal's bow, Sugilite's flail, Sardonyx's war hammer and Obsidian's greatsword.
  • Jasper's helmet seems to be of a modern or futuristic design perhaps contrasting how outdated the Crystal Gems are compared to newer Homeworld Gems.
    • However, since Jasper was made halfway through the Rebellion as revealed in "Beta" and presumably had her helmet since emerging the design was most likely just a coincidence.
  • Smoky Quartz's yo-yo is not traditionally a weapon, let alone a medieval one. However, yo-yos have been around for a long time, first historically mentioned in 500 B.C. and thought to have originated from China. There have been records of Filipino hunters using yo-yos.
    • Since Rainbow Quartz 2.0's weapon is a parasol and Sunstone has a pair of suction cups it seems Steven's fusions typically do not make traditional weapons.
• Like the Crystal Gems' outfits their signature weapons have stars on them with the exceptions of Rose, Steven, Ruby and Obsidian.
  • Garnet's gauntlets have large stars on the back of the hand and previously had star designs on the bottom surface around her wrists.
  • Amethyst's whip has a lilac star-shaped cross guard.
  • Opal's bow has two yellow star-shaped crossguards identical to Amethyst's whip.
  • The bludgeon on Sugilite's flail is adorned with a silver ring shaped like a half-star.
  • Pearl's spear has a star-shaped pommel.
  • Sardonyx's war hammer has a star on the top end of the shaft.
  • The facets of Smoky Quartz's yoyo form a star.
  • Rainbow 2.0's parasol has a star design on its surface.

• Out of all the Crystal Gem weapons introduced Obsidian's greatsword is the largest.
• Each of the Crystal Gems' weapons matches the color palette of their owner.

  • According to Matt Burnett it is possible Sapphire does not have her own weapon. It is also possible that Sapphires as a Gem-type (including Padparadscha) do not have weapons but instead rely on their future vision.
• Gems occasionally used physical weapons to replace and/or supplement summoned ones or other abilities entirely. All material weapons used by the Crystal Gems were created by Bismuth.
  • Pearl owned a collection of swords and once a magic axe.
  • Rose and later Steven owned a collection of flails, axes, armors, a sword and its scabbard.
  • Lapis Lazulis used their hydrokinesis to create objects, noticeably a pair of wings.
  • Peridot, Squaridot and Demantoid used Limb Enhancers before losing them.
  • Aquamarine used a wand disguised as a bow in her hair with tractor beams similar to Limb Enhancers but potent enough to stun multiple enemies at once including fusions such as Alexandrite.
  • The Diamonds, with the exception of Pink and Steven used their own natural powers.
  • In "A Single Pale Rose" a Gem soldier used a flail against Garnet during the Rebellion.
• Garnet, Steven and Pearl have been shown to summon weapons of different sizes while Amethyst can alter the number of tails at the end of her whip.
• "Bubbled" revealed that different Gems of the same type can have different weapons as the Crystal Gem Ruby and Eyeball have different ones respectively.
