Snowflake Obsidian is a member of the Crystal Gems who first appeared in the episode "Change Your Mind". A close friend of Bismuth before becoming corrupted, Snowflake Obsidian was mentioned twice by Bismuth in her titular episode. She (along with the other bubbled Gems) was uncorrupted by Steven and the Diamonds in "Change Your Mind". Just like many of the other uncorrupted Gems, she now lives in Little Homeworld, working at Beach City Funland with Larimar.
Appearance[]
Snowflake Obsidian is a tall, bulky, warrior-like gem. She has spiky light gray mane-like hair around her head, shaped similarly to the patterns scattered over her form, "battle scars" as they were listed by Rebecca in concept art, which mirror real-life snowflake obsidian. She has only one eye (possibly due to corruption), that's closed most of the time. She also has no nose and gray skin. Her gemstone is embedded in the back of her right hand.
Her outfit consists of a black breastplate with shoulder pads, shorts in the same color, and boots. Her waist and thighs are uncovered.
Personality[]
Not much is known about her personality, aside from the fact that she seems friendly and can become easily panicked. Despite being a Crystal Gem ever since the war, she still retains some of the mindset she had when serving Homeworld, as she still wanted to do jobs similar to the one she was made for. She, like Bismuth, likes to make puns.
Abilities[]
Snowflake Obsidian possesses standard Gem abilities: bubbling, shapeshifting, fusion, regeneration, agelessness, gravity shifting, photokinesis, gem storage, and superhuman strength/durability.
Natural Abilities[]
- Enhanced Strength: Snowflake Obsidian is strong enough to play volleyball with Quartz soldiers, who are considerably brutal and violent in the game.
- Enhanced Durability: Snowflake Obsidian is remarkably durable, since she's the only Gem that was not cracked after playing volleyball.
Unique Abilities[]
- Cryokinesis: In a similar way to Sapphire, Snowflake Obsidian can generate ice around whatever she touches, as seen in "Guidance", when she was able to create an ice pillar. She seems to involuntarily activate this ability when stressed.
History[]
Thousands of Years Ago[]
On Homeworld, Snowflake dug ice trenches for their armies. Eventually, Snowflake defected from Homeworld, which made her become a member of the Crystal Gems. She fought in the war until the very end when the Diamonds unleashed the Corrupting Light. Snowflake was unable to escape the blast and became corrupted when exposed to the light.
"Bismuth"[]
Bismuth mentions her friend Snowflake and later believes that she was shattered during the Rebellion.
"Change Your Mind"[]
Snowflake is one of the many Corrupted Gems that are healed. After she's uncorrupted, she is seen talking with Larimar, smiling.
Steven Universe: The Movie[]
Snowflake appears as a background character in Little Homeworld.
"Guidance"[]
Snowflake Obsidian first appears working with Larimar at the Funland snow cone stand as part of Amethyst's job initiative program. Steven then learns that she used to dig ice trenches on Homeworld. Not wanting her to be forced to do a job she was assigned to on Homeworld, she is reassigned by Steven to fly Andy's plane for skywriting, though her lack of flight knowledge caused her to panic and freeze the plane, forcing Smoky Quartz to save her and Andy. She was traumatized by the crash but did not receive any injuries. In the end, she returned to her snow cone business.
"Volleyball"[]
Snowflake Obsidian appears as a background character playing a volleyball game that was hosted by Pearl.
"Bluebird"[]
Snowflake appears as a background character at the party that was hosted for Bluebird upon her arrival on Earth.
"Everything's Fine"[]
She is seen inside Bismuth's forge when Steven broke Bismuth’s anvil in half.

Relationships[]
Bismuth[]
Snowflake Obsidian, as a member of the Crystal Gems before being corrupted, was friends with Bismuth. Once Bismuth is first freed from her bubble (5,000 years after being poofed and having missed the rest of the War), Bismuth asks about the whereabouts of some of her closest Crystal Gem friends, including "Snowflake".
Larimar[]
Snowflake Obsidian’s relationship with Larimar has shown to have a good relationship, as they could be seen smiling at each other in "Change Your Mind" after being healed from corruption, walking to class together at Little Homeworld and working together to make snow cones at Beach City Funland. They also are bonded by their shared powers, both manipulating and creating ice.
Trivia[]
- Snowflake Obsidian shares the same gem type as Obsidian (the fusion of Pearl, Amethyst, Ruby, Sapphire, and Steven).
- Along with Carnelian, Emerald, and Spinel, Snowflake Obsidian is the sole individual of her Gem type to be seen in full detail.
- She is the second full (i.e., non-hybrid) Gem to have a male voice actor (Ian Jones-Quartey), the first being "Fisto", a Pebble, voiced by Zach Callison.
- Counting Gem hybrids, Snowflake is the sixth Gem overall to have a non-female voice, after Steven, Emerald, "Fisto", Rainbow Quartz 2.0, and Steg.
