Something that many viewers have noticed is that Steven Universe appears to ignore certain aspects of gemology such as how rubies and sapphires have vastly different ranks and abilities and how Aquamarine Emerlad and Bixbite have vastly different appearances. However, I think that real world gemology still applies and that this can be explained. Let’s sttt with what we know about Gems. We know that Gems are created with “Diamond Juices” and that they are AI. I believe that there is code mixed with these juices that is coded to respond differently to different minerals and there is only one gem code that is very complex. For Corundrums, despite their differences in rank Ruby and Sapphire have similar body type, height, and face shape, the key difference being that Sapphire has one eye and no nose and future vision. So what if the presence of chromium caused the fluid to respond differently than it would to other varieties of corundrum, causing the future vision to go glitchyand cause serious problems, and because the future vision would not work with this, they modified the code in the gem fluid to erase the Future Vision coding when chromium was present to avoid problems and add code for Strength and fire powers to compensate and alter the code for physical appearance a bit to establish it as a new rank of gem. This would explain why they look so similar and why Garnet has less extra body parts. Also, chromium is present to a lesser degree in Padparadscha Sapphires. This could perfectly explain Padparadscha. She has some chromium, so the Sapphire coding doesn’t work right, but since the ruby code is stronger when more chromium is present, she is a defective gem that blues the line between rubies and Sapphires. We can see that she has shorter hair like a ruby and there is a seen where Rhodonite uses places two hands on her face to cover her vision. Two hands, placed in a manner to suggest that she may have two eyes instead of one.
