  • Every page I go on that has lyrics (Comet, for example), I see this red error linking to the Template:Lyrics page. I've turned off AdBlock and tried it in both Firefox and Chrome, and from private windows so I know it's not a caching thing.

Is the lyrics template some sort of plugin that needs to be updated? Or is there a new structure that all the lyrics need to be put into? I'll help out however possible.

    • It looks like another user broke the template. It should be fixed now though Emoticon_yes.png

    • Just for reference, if it helps you understand how you yourself might be able to fix this error in the future no matter what template you see it on: It happens when someone calls the template on the template page itself. That is, say, Template:Lyrics has {{Lyrics}} on it. :P

If you were to call a template on its own page and not be stopped, the template would just recursively call itself, into oblivion, like two mirrors aimed straight at each other reflect into each other over and over and over again without stopping. The message was just telling you about that looping problem because the wiki software is smart enough to stop it.

I was able to get that far, but wasn't able to figure out how to edit the template itself, or find that error on the template page. Are certain user permissions required to view that, or was I just looking in the wrong place?

    • Pages in the template namespace have an edit button like any other, and it doesn't look like editing the namespace has any specific rules technologically preventing it for this wiki or anything.

In this case because the person replaced all the content, at the time of the error its only content was itself. That's not the only way a template loop can happen but because it's the most common (someone who hasn't mastered the Mediawiki learning curve tries to use the template by editing the template to replace it with the template), usually the best way to fix it is to mouse over the edit dropdown and find the last unaffected version in the page history and just click that version and edit/save it to make the page go back to that version, because at that point the version that would be current wouldn't have any indication of what used to be on the page, and the only indication of the error in the source code would be the page's title in curly brackets (I don't remember if the template page itself (rather than just transclusions on pages where it's used) will report the loop or not).

(If that's not the sort of issue you were having trying to figure out how to edit it then I'm having a brain fart trying to understand what you mean. XP)

    • Yup, that's exactly what I was confused about. If I catch it again, I can probably check the revision history before reporting a bug.
