  • Steven was without a doubt a great show (with it's own ups and downs). What did you like/dislike the most about the series?

    • I like that it tackled deep subjects, the characters, and Future for the most part, didn't like the ten minute format, sometimes the story moved too slowly, and sometimes the arcs ended on a bit of an unsatisfying note.

    • I really loved the characterisation, and the way they came up with some really clever and deeply intricate stories and ideas. Acting was top notch: not a bad performance to be seen.  Most of the art (particularly the backgrounds) were gorgeous. Some of the earlier songs were just brilliant :)

On to the moaning, I have always been bugged by their storyboard-driven arcs, because I feel like that leads to 90% buildup and then only 10% payoff most of the time. eg Peridot's arc was really good, whereas the Diamonds; Spinel and even Steven just felt rushed IMO because much more time was spent building up than actually resolving.

My partner suggested (which I think would have been AMAZING) having Steven's meltdown halfway-ish through Future. That way we spend almost as much time with him during the resolution, instead of (another...) flash-forward where things are Groovy Because Therapy. But it's a kid's show afterall 🤷‍♀️

I would've loved it if we were there during the resolution to Steven's meltdown, we wouldn't have to imagine it, we would know exactly what happened. Ah well, it is what it is.

    • I want like about the show is that it always has a happy ending

    • I was always amazed how much story/character they were able to squish into 13 minutes.

There's hardly a clunker episode in the entire series. Okay, there were a few in the beginning of Season one, but once Lapis was introduced that's when things really took off. :D

    • I guess one of the things I disliked about the show - and this may be controversial - is the excessive amount of crying.

Hear me out before you take out your torches and pitchforks!  Whereas I have nothing against crying, I do think the show was a little excessive with it.  e.g. remember in rose's scabbard when Pearl broke down into tears near the end of the series.  Thing is, we had already seen her in tears earlier in the episode.  Wouldn't her break down at the end be more impactful if it was the first time she cried in that episode?

Or how about when lars criticised Steven's 'weird mom', and Steven was in tears and gave the best lines in that episode?

"What do you know about my Mom?  I didn't even know about my mom!"

Again, wouldn't it had more been impactful if Lars wasn't already in tears before Steven?

I guess another thing I disliked was how they treated Rose at the end.  I mean sure, she lied about who she really was, and did a couple of other questionably moral things, but did she really deserve this shunning at the end?  Despite all the positive things she did.  Ok I'm sure the rose haters would agree, but I don't know.  I was really hoping at the end that Steven would come to terms that no matter who Rose was and what she did she was still his mom who loved him, but nope!  She was evil now, and deserved to be stashed away like Bismuth or that android in the first episode of series 2 of black mirror.

    • Oh, and another thing I disliked was how steven centric the show was.  I know that was essential to the series but still!  I'm hoping if there's any continuation it will be from another character's pov.
