While it did look alot like Jasper, we don't really know if that was her. NOT DENYING IT, just some food for thought I suppose.

    • Just watched the episode thank you Dailymotion. I definitely think this is an episode that is going to be very important in the future. Now connie is trained to be a sword fighter and with Steven's shield plus the mention that if they are going to fight, they are going to fight together, I believe that when the time comes when other Homeworld Gems attack, Steven and Connie will fuse together to become Stevonnie and they will fight together as one with Connie's sword fighting skills and Steven's sword and shield. I also found it interesting that it seems that pearl sacrificed herself numerous times for Rose and that Jasper did indeed fight Rose in the past according to the holographic flashback. Plus it seems that Pearl still sees Steven as Rose. I am convinced that in the future there is going to be episodes where stuff really goes down and Steven and Connie will be forced to fight. Can't wait to see Stevonnie in combat.

    • I really liked the new intro and the new song and the flashback and basically everything about it!  Did anyone else catch the Amethyst outfit error, though?  When she and Garnet were standing on the Warp Pad she was wearing her old outfit for a shot.  It doesn't really matter, just something I saw.

    • The change between intros really shows the evolution of the series.

Old: The gems had their original designs. Steven couldn't really use his powers, and he was looked at like a son. Connie is an observer, and Greg is a goofball.

New: The gems have their new designs. Steven has good control over his powers, and he is looked at as a teammate. Connie fights alongside Steven, and Greg is happier and more mature.

    • Okay... Now I'm convinced that Rebecca's trying to kill us with feels.

She said that this is the real start of the series, which explains the new intro. Although, I remember her saying the same thing about Mirror Gem and Ocean Gem.

This is the second Steven Bomb, and this ep has some parallels to the first ep of the old Steven Bomb. Sworn to the Sword and Rose's Scabbard both focus on Pearl's feelings for Rose. Does that mean that the other episodes will follow the same pattern? Rising Tides/Crashing Skies could deal with Homeworld Gems and the threat they pose to Earth, like The Message. Keeping It Together might show the gems trying to shield Steven from their dark secrets, like in Political Power. We Need to Talk can be the climax, like The Return and Jailbreak, with one cool down episode (Chille Tid and Full Disclosure) to let all of that sink in. If this theory is true, get ready for another wild ride!

Sugar said on Reddit that the intro would change when new members are added. Many people assumed it would be one of the home world gems, such as Lapis, but it could very well be Connie.

      -Threat removed-

There is so much character development happening here. Steven can use his shield like a pro, Garnet is apparently cracking jokes, Pearl is more understanding of Steven's feelings at the end, and Connie is no longer this shy, insecure girl anymore. The only one (in this episode) who hasn't changed much is Amethyst.

If this is the first episode of the StevenBomb, I can't wait to see what they can come up with next.

    • I completely forgot to talk about that new opening. Yeah I really liked it, its a lot peppier than the original intro. As for the episode, it was decent. Like I said before Connie learning to swordfight is probably going to become significantly more important in future episodes. I think its a good way to jump start Stevenbomb 2. Things will get real on wednesdays episode keeping it together. Sworn to the sword and Rising tides/crashing skies are probably the appetizers for the main course from wednesday onwards. This was a good episode. I thought it was sweet how connie just wants to be useful and wants to protect Steven and some of the things she said almost sounds like she feels that she is nothing compared to Steven and the Crystal Gems.

Just like that episode I was filled with equal amounts of sadness, pity, loathing and hatred for Pearl and her actions. It was really scary how she turned Connie into essentially a suicidal Steven fanatic, and equally scary how easily Connie was turned onto the idea...

Then there is the Pearl x Rose stuff. People still think it was plantonic on the side of Pearl?

I remember this one theory that the Gem War happened in the modern day, and Steven Universe takes place in the distant future, after human civilization collapsed and rebuilt itself. Sort of like how Adventure Time takes place a thousand years after the Great Mushroom War.

There's plenty of canon evidence to support the theory that Jasper is from the kindergarten as well, though a better "cooked" version of Amethyst. Mayhaps the gem Rose fought was an even more perfect version of Amethyst/Jasper.

Also, it's axe. That axe wasn't it's gem weapon. That axe was the giant axe Garnet and Amethyst salvaged from the gem battlefield in "Rose Scabbard."

Yes, but, even if the timeline is different it still be just a slightly different version of ours and the gems war and the Middle Ages are just way too distant time periods (the gems war was almost 4500 years after the Middle Ages if I remember) and even if the post apocalyptic theory could give it some kind of sense, I personally don't consider that theory to be true and I won't consider it for this discussion

    • Loved Pearl's reaction to Connie wanting to learn swordfighting. This might be the first time Pearl ever bonded with a human, just like Amethyst did with Greg over Lil' Butler. Now all we need is a human friend for Garnet...Though I do have a theory that the upcoming 'Keeping it together' end's up with Garnets fusion becoming de-stabilised due to kindergarden equiptment activated by Peridot and end's with them being seperated for a few episodes, which would be neat as it would cut the Gem's fighting potential down for a while and might make Steven 'healing' a corrupted Gem higher priority. Though if that happens at all it would likely just strain her fusion enough so she can't be as active as much, becuase they just got a new opening. anyway, really liked this episode and am looking forward to tomorrow

I agree. That Gem that Rose fought in the Holographic flashback was probably a manufactured kindergarten Gem which looks similar to Jasper. That makes me think what if all the Gems manufactured in the kindergarten are supposed to look like Jasper and the reason why she called Amethyst an overcooked runt is because Amethyst is a mistake and was supposed to be a look more like how Jasper looks. That and the whole some lost defective pearl line makes me think that rather than being individuals, all the gems apart from garnet and other fusions are actually part of different species.

    • Great episode couple of things

      1. Connie and Steven are developing into great combat fighters

      2. Is how Pearl was training Connie. She said to Steven that she would that she would be a valuable asset. Pearl unintentionally in my opinion broke Connie into believing she was expendable that is some hardcore stuff wow. Meaning Pearl knowingly and literally saw herself as a chess piece for Rose who judging from the small flashback did not want. Goes a lot into her being a perfectionist. She might not do it for herself but for the King piece she wishes to serve and she wanted to put that mentality into Connie. She almost succeeded if not for Steven

      Just my thoughts

    • My personal analysis for Sworn to the Sword was actually quite disappointing.

Aside from the title, this was really another Pearl flip-out. It's been shown many times that one of Pearl's flaws is her hanging onto the past, and her history with Rose at the battlefield. However, that is not what bothered me. What bothered me was the fact that for the third time, Pearl let her emotions get in the way of her common sense. First in Space Race, next in Rose's Scabbard, and now Pearl has tried to get Connie to see the world through her eyes, teaching her that only Steven matters. I kept thinking, "Has Pearl forgotten that Connie is human, and can't regenerate if her body is badly hurt? Imagine if Connie got hit by a sword. Then what?"

      In conclusion:

    • Wow, this is a great episode! Promises of Steven and Connie fighting side-by-side in the future, the two of them acting generally adorable together; Steven still being wary of Holo-Pearl; seeing how devoted Connie is; more about the Crystal Gems during the war; seemingly innocuous hints about the Diamond Authority;  further hints about Pearl's feelings for Rose; the mood whiplash near the end...so much packed into one episode.

Edit--Also, new into and "Do it for Him/Her" is an excellent song!

I have to wonder if Pearl saying "why won't you just let me do this for you, Rose?!" was Pearl projecting herself onto Connie, or does she see Steven as a replacement goldfish for Rose. Probably a bit of both, actually...

    • Holy schmoz, THIS EP WAS AWESOME! Connie and Steven being awesome(HE CAN USE HIS SHIELD IN COMBAT), Pearl's grief clouding her judgement(always a good feelstrip), and the amazing new opening.

AS FOR JASPER- how do we know when Jasper said "I was looking forward to meeting her" she meant for the first time? ALSO- its possible that gems has size augmenting abilities- AND the axe is not a non-indicator, as gems can have more than one weapons besides the ones that their gems create. BUT- the theory that it is a kindergarten gem IS IN FACT POSSIBLE- as her helmet style was- SLIGHTLY-different. Though it could've changed with regeneration, similar to Garnet's regeneration. TIME WILL TELL!

I mean she stated to the Mayor she seen humans when they were hunters. And that painting of them in the Amethyst's Room shows that they most likely have easily gathered some information about humans

    • alright *cracks knuckles* time to babble on the internet

first of all thank you lgb111 for that feelsbat image. it made my day.

second of all, the concept of  knight has existed in human culture as long as war has, though probably not as defined as it was in the middle ages. pearl says she first became familliar with the term, not learned it at that place. her understanding of knights probably came later than acting out the actual role she gave herself (like she was a knight before she knew exactly what a knight was) anyway, so the timing doesnt have to match perfectly.

third. rose quartz = pink/rose diamond confirmed. the crest/coat of arms/symbol/insignia whatever you want to call it on the walls of pearls arena.

fourth. it has now become ridiculously obvious that pearl was in love with rose. i dont give two wags of a dogs tail how you see it, pearl was in love with rose.

fifth. pearl does not see steven as rose's replacement nor, in contrast, the remains of a heart-breaking tradgedy. pearl knows steven and loves steven in a different way than she did rose, but she also knows that steven used to be rose, and probably feels that they are not entirely two completely separate people.

when you associate two people very closely, say, siblings or good fr13nds, the two different people can trigger the same thoughts and feelings in you. if youre mad at a fr13nd and youre hanging out with his brother, his brother furstrating you could make you blow up at your fr13nd even though he isnt even there.

steven is opposing pearl, so pearl associates steven's words with a memory of rose telling her she shouldnt sacrfice herself so often. pearl blows up at rose for something that happened ages ago, that's clearly been suppressed for many years.

Furthermore, the flashback wasn't even a flashback, it was just Steven's interpretation of what Garnet was saying, seeing as how we saw the exact same sequence play out with Connie moments later. And since Jasper was the scariest gem Steven had seen at the time, it's no surprise that the symbolic "bad guy" looked like her.

Possibly, but those are extremely specific conditions that don't really match Jasper's choice of words when she described the conflict and her familiarity with the Crystal Gems. If she recognized Pearl personally she probably would have said so, or Pearl would have.

Also means being introduced to someone. Odds are, if Jasper meant to convey that she wanted to see Rose again, she would have made that clear. "Meet her again", "see her again", "meet up with her", but saying she "hoped to meet her" still implies that it would have been for the first time. I'm not saying it's impossible that they've met before, just that it's unlikely.

Just watched the episode thank you Dailymotion.

I hope you're right about Stevvonie. It would be amazing if we got to see them kick butt on the battlefield instead of on the dance floor. I'm really wondering if that was Jasper that we saw though. It certainly looked like her but her head gear was a little different. I have yet to see any of the gems change their weaponry. Plus we've seen how some gems carrying similiar traits (example: Jasper and Amethyst). I'm wondering if there are gem classes where some gems bare certain resemblances to each other and this might be someone similar to the class Jasper was apart of.

Actually, I'm wondering if her carrying Rose's sword in the intro is a way to symbolize her developing sword skills and the possibility of her becoming Stevvonie for battle. Norite mentioned the idea of the two fo them using their sword and sheild skills in battle against the Gem Homeworld. • I'm reading through all these posts, and everybody has such interesting thoughts and theories to share! I love this show, and everybody's theories are certainly interesting to read. I would just advise everybody learn the difference between evidence and confirmation. Evidence towards a theory is good. Strong theories in science and history are really helpful and about as close to fact as we can get. Just remember though, even the strongest evidence towards one conclusion can be made inconsequential by different evidence. Unless a topic is undisputable, there is room for argument with it (and even then people will still argue). Claiming absolute confirmation with non absolute proof can lead to misinformation and confusion. There is always room for error, especially with emotions, which this show is filled with.

    • I love how the theme of the episode was about protecting your love ones, but you shouldn't get too over zealous  about it or else you might get your self hurt in the process. Also it seems like pearl was hurt during the war, possible dealing with some form of ptsd. She probably finds it difficult to cope since Rose is gone.

In the song, Pearl said "deep down, you know you're not a fighter." She was talking about herself and Connie. I guess Pearl's are supposed to be libriains or something.

Yeah! I've been thinking that maybe Pearls are meant to be housemaids or something and that's why she's always cleaning everything up. And maybe the "defective" part is something about her nose, 'cuz we haven't seen that anywhere else in the Universe.

Pearl sword fighting just makes me love her even more. I've grown to respect her more and more as new episodes air. btw i think Pearl loves rose  more than a friend. It feels like marceline and Bonnibel all over again and i just LOVE it.

Although i don't think Pearls are to be maids; she's also smart u know. I think a teacher or professor would be better. She is a good mentor afterall.

    • I am suppose that Connie is left-handed since she's handing sword with left one. Or, I am thinking that when they fuse the Rose's(now Steven's) shield would be on right and the(also Rose's)sword would be in left. As Rose did.

Well her hair and body looks like Jasper's! What if her and Jasper were like sisters or friends, no wonder Jasper is angry with and wants to fight Rose! She wants to punch her in the face for beating her own "sister" or best friend.

If this episode represents Season 2, I hope Rebecca Sugar quits and goes back to work on Adventure Time or something.

    • I just noticed that in the Sky arena, there are four coloured diamonds. Maybe this shows that Rose was originally one of the leaders of the Gem Homeworld represented by the pink diamond, but she turned her back on them in order to protect the Earth. I have a feeling that the climax of this show may be that the other three leaders represented by the other Diamonds will come to Earth and The Crystal Gems, Stevonnie and maybe even some other reformed gems who have chosen to fight alongside them such as Lapis and Peridot will have to fight them for the fate of the Earth.

interesting... I took the shattered pink diamond as a visual metaphor for Rose's death. I never considered it to represent her betrayal to homeworld.

I think the gems will most likely get new members, they are definitely going to need it, if they hope of defeating homeworld. But let's not rush it, the crewniverse needs to take their time with the story and then give the crystal gems new members.

Its not, if that were the first time he used his shield after never using it before- THAN it would be a Deus ex Machina. But seeing as how he's shown signs of controlling it through trial and error, its more character development.

5 episodes before this one, Steven could barely even summon his shield. Now, he shows expertise that rivals even Pearl's. At least Connie got a training montage. There is no explanation for Steven being so good with his shield all of a sudden, and that is why it is a Deus ex Machina.

How to you know that between Say Uncle and Sworn to the Sworn was a short amount of time, it could have been weeks or even months in thier time.  Lets say that between each episode, like in real time, they have a weeks difference, and the haitus was 46 days, that a about a month and a half for Steven to develope his skills.  Also, be fore this, he has never had a greater reason or person to defend against a force that many.

I think it has to deal with his emotion. Remeber in Jail Break how he was jumping to protected the Gems and his shield active I think this is the same deal he is not thinking about control his shield but the emotions that led him to summon them. He still doesn't kno what summons his shield but he knows he cares about Connie.  He was charing without thinking and still in that state he was fighting with Connie

It looks like Steven is finally mastering his sheild. Pearl's character is once again developing. Steven and Connie's relationship is also developing. They are well on their way to becoming a couple. The Crewniverse really knows how to develope relationships, platonic or romantic. It looks to me that Connie is gonna have a much bigger roll in the show. She really has sword fighting skills and I really hope Steven cathes up to her level. He can't just be a shield, I think he should use a sword too, but that's just me.

If Connie's parents know about her being a sword fighter, they would probably freak out and forbid her from ever seeing Steven and the CGs again. Let's hope THAT doesn't happen.

    • BEYOND EPIC! I wanna Connie wield Rose's sword like a pro SO MUCH NOW thanks to the new title which judging by the quality and style means A. SU IS STAYING and B. THIS NEW SEASON IS GONNA BE ACTION PACKED AND AWESOME!!! I love how steven and connie were a sword and shield duo (which may be a reference to the old marvel heroes CLOAK & DAGGER). I also feel like this season may make pearl be seen in a different light. Instead of cold, calculating, and skilled, she may be seen as a "lost soul" without Rose and I really wanna see her gain a second dimension in her character. ALSO: GARNET TOLD A JOKE THAT MADE AMYTHEST LAUGH XD!

Yeah, but I find it lazy writing that Steven goes from barely even being able to summon his shield for a short amount of time to being able to adeptly use it as well as his bubble to defeat tons of Pearl clones on maximum difficulty and even Pearl herself.

It was pretty much explained in Say Uncle that he can easily summon his shield when he has the big emotional connection to it. And Steven caught onto that too. In The Return he summoned a shield that was easily 10x bigger than the shield he usually uses, and it was being used to deflect a high energy shot aimed to kill. So it clearly took more energy out of him to do that than it would be to use a tiny shield.

Also, how on earth can you say this is the worst episode when T-shirt Club exists?

Has no one else spotted a pattern that seems obvious to me?

Steven can only summon his shield to protect SOMEONE ELSE!

The only time I know of that he summoned his shield without someone else being in danger was in Gem Glow, the first episode, when it came by accident for the very first time.

Does anyone know of another example?

Then you sir, are tone deaf

The Crewniverse really knows how to develope relationships, platonic or romantic. It looks to me that Connie is gonna have a much bigger roll in the show. She really has sword fighting skills and I really hope Steven cathes up to her level. He can't just be a shield, I think he should use a sword too, but that's just me.

If Connie's parents know about her being a sword fighter, they would probably freak out and forbid her from ever seeing Steven and the CGs again. Let's hope THAT doesn't happen.

I think Steven will probably learn to use a sword in time since his mother used a sword and he knows where it is.

I don't even... Also Steven ex Machina for... Getting involved? Is using his own powers equivalent of a Deus ex Machina now?
Yeah, but I find it lazy writing that Steven goes from barely even being able to summon his shield for a short amount of time to being able to adeptly use it as well as his bubble to defeat tons of Pearl clones on maximum difficulty and even Pearl herself.

UNLESS YOU HAVE CONFIRMED TIME BETWEEN THE LAST CANON EPISODE AND THE LAST HE COULD HAVE HAVE ANYWHERE FROM A DAY TO A MONTH OR 2 SO DON'T SAY IT WAS LAZY WRITING. ALSO THEY DIDN'T DEFEAT PEARL, MORE OR LESS DISARM, AND THE DUFFICULTY OF THE HOLO-PEARLS WERE PROBABLY HIGH BUT ALSO PROBABLY NOT MAX. PLUS PEARL WAS IN DESTRESS OVER ROSE WHEN SHE WAS DISARMED. AND AS FOR THE FACT HE NEVER HAD TO DEFEND AGAINST THAT MANY IS TRUE, HE DID HAVE TO DEFEND AGAINST A GIANT LASER CANNON!

In Sworn to the Sword Connie was apparently training with Pearl for some time, at least several days, probably much longer.

In all that time she probably got cuts and bruises many times. (I used to fence, it happens a lot.) Steven has been taking care of that all along. Connie's mom has figured out that something is going on, she is just not sure what.

      Probably not Jasper

The axe looks nothing like the axe in Rose's Scabbard. The gem's helmet looks nothing like Jasper's helmet. The gem is several times taller than Jasper (Who appears to be about the same height as Rose). Even the body proportions are wrong, Jasper is much broader at the shoulders relative to the waist (though that could be due to her cloak).

The only thing they have in common is their hair. Claiming this gem is Jasper is as odd as claiming that Amethyst is Jasper because their hair is similar.

I totally think the same; i also deleted the trivia that it was the same weapon when it obviously isn't.

    • i think its dumb your comparing such tiny details look at the big picture. thats obviously suppose to be jasper. she has the hair, the crash helmet, and the body size. who cares about body proportions or the helmet shape. plus the reason she looks different is probably because she got poofed and made herself a new form.

    • once again the axe that garnet is holding isnt even doubled sided so the one jasper was using was a different one

    • and the reason she was so big in the flashback was to demonstrate her being an powerful force.

Impossible, that would imply that the gems are a large race with occasionally-overlapping physical traits like people.

So. Also, there are only like a hundred or so gemstones, for empire like the Gem Homeworld, there would need to be multiple kinds of the same gems, implying that some would look similar

    • What I find weird on this site ever since I joined is that there are so many different people on here, everybody has a right to an opinion but what I don't get is if you don't like something then why would you go on to the site about it? I have encountered people on this site who absolutely cannot stand this show and just don't like it. Its like someone who absolutely hates football goes on to a site about football and says that the sport sucks even though most of the people on the site are die hard fans, what is the point? The majority of people are going to disagree with you anyway and you are probably not going to change many people's minds about how they feel. There are shows I cannot stand but I don't feel like I need to go to there site just to say to the fans that it sucks because even though I guess you are entitled to do that because it is your opinion, it just seems like a waste of time, effort and energy on something I don't like. I hope I have not offended anyone because that is not what I intended to do.

Anyway I definitely believe the theory that there are multiple kinds of the same gem. I believe that the Jasper gem that fought Rose in the flashback was not the same Jasper from The Return/Jailbreak because she said she had never met Rose and that Jasper Gem that fought Rose seemed a lot larger than she was and had an axe. And the fact that Jasper called Amethyst an overcooked runt could mean that the Gems made at the Kindergarten were suppose to be big and intimidating but Amethyst turned out imperfect. And the giant axe that Garnet took home had a purple Gem on it just like the colour of Amethyst's gem which makes me think whether that axe belonged to a Giant Amethyst gem.

No one is going to question how did Pearl learned the concept of knight from humans if the gems war was before the Middle Ages?

Well, it didn't say explicitly that the experience happened before the feeling.  Perhaps her meeting an early knight allowed her to be able to articulate, describe, or encode her feelings in a way she could express to others.

    • Honestly I think the episode was fantastic! from the cute songs to the lovely animation and there was so much character decelopment!! It showed Pearl projecting herself and her emotions so entirely onto connie it was fantastically done. and the fact that they showed it all happening in the song i loved it. In the beginning pearl was a mentor and she was kind and she was teaching connie how to stay balanced and poised and from that point it just FLIPPED. It started showing the change in connie when pearl told connie to foucs on her and at that point she wasnt being as open and gentle, it had turned into something serious for pearl. When she said to connie dont you want him to live it was such a huge turning point in connie it showed how she wanted to proove that she would give her life for steven like pearl had done for rose. It just showed so much of connie and pearl and i love how it reflected upon pearl's mentality. its so hard to sum up in a short paragraph like this but i loved the way they chose to show off more of how unstable pearl is.

    • I loved this episode because it revealed that Pearl was willing to die for Rose. To add to this, the episode showed the audience that Steven tries to work with his shield to the point where he can make it grow in size and block several attacks at once.

If you feel like complaining, then just think about what Steven said in a partition of the episode: "Someday soon we may be fighting some really bad guys. When that day comes, I want to fight with you, together..."

This quote implies that Steven is well aware of the dangers of being a Crystal Gem. Personally, I believe that because of this, it is safe to imply that Steven is perparing for that day and did so during the hiatus.

On other notes, I liked the idea that Connie can now become more involved with Steven's life; her training was expressed with a song, and is, by the way, one of the best TV strategies used in order to have a show progress without a "level-grinding" type of way. Of which has an unessisary prolonged advancement of the plot.

In addition, the new opening is much better than the original, and the multitude of character developments was a nice touch in the episode. So, I see no real reasons to hate this episode in any mannerism.
