Might've been a last minute decision by the network. Like, I'm guessing there were some sort of unexpected production delays, and they realized they had two otions:
- Start airing new episodes in August as planned, and break for a month of reruns when they run out of finished episodes in September or October, right in the middle of the fall season. (Which would probably be bad for ratings.)
- Extend the summer hiatus for another month, and then air a solid string of new episodes every week until the winter hiatus. (Which would probably be good for ratings, especially since the mid-season finale arc would probably air during fall sweeps.)

I'm just guessing. Shows typically go on a winter break after a mid-season finale in fall, Steven Universe went on hiatus during the last two winters, and Adventure Time has had a winter hiatus every year since the series premiere.
