  • Talk about the episode.

This episode was sooo short. I loved the character development in Ronaldo and the appearence from Peedee. There should be more Steven-Tag in the future.

If sneaple becomes a thing I have every right to be disappointed.

I also loved the references to culture of today: anime boards, dubs and subs, online encyclopedia that I'm a viewer of/editor of, sneaple, it was all amazing.

And that quote about humans from Pearl, man.

I wonder if he's going to either apologize or be defensive of his actions, or be more interested in the Gems.

      Well, he's not wrong XD

Anyway, Ronaldo was going through an existential crisis before Steven burst his bubble in this episode. What he said at the end, about there having to be more, I think he views his own life the same way Pearl views all human life, and he's desperately trying to find a way to matter in the grand scheme of things. The gems' callousness toward that was kinda messed up, they have just as much to learn about humanity as Steven does about gems. They look down on the individual and scoffed at Ronaldo's quest for significance, and I'm looking forward to seeing Steven challenge their perceptions at some point.

    • Pearl: "Humans just lead short, boring, insignificant lives so they make up stories to feel like they're a part of something bigger. They want to blame all the world's problems on some single enemy they can fight instead of a complex network of interrelated forces beyond anyone's control"

      Amethyst: “It’s sad, and funny.”

It would be so different if Pearl had said "Some humans..." but she didn't. If Steven gave what Pearl just said any thought, he’d realized she indirectly called his dad, his human friends, boring and insignificant… Soooooooo, what does that make Steven, half boring and insignificant? Steven better start acting as the human race’s ambassador and correcting the gem race’s perspective on humanity soon or things will start to get ugly, to say the least.

Interesting thing about what Pearl said is that if human lives were so insignificant, why would the Crystal Gems exist as “humanity’s protectors?” Even Amethyst wasn’t disagreeing with Pearl at all. Keep in mind that the Crystal Gems are supposed to be the ‘heroes’ here. If all, or ‘most,’ (assuming Rose didn’t have this opinion) gems believe this, could you imagine other gems coming to Earth and treating the Earth like an ant hill and the human race like ants? And when that happens it should be an episode that isn't practically 10 minutes...

        Loading editor
    • I think Pearl meant that humans have really short lifespans and so they don't really have a huge impact on the world, hence the "insignificant" part. I'm pretty sure she didn't mean anything bad towards humans as she's part of a team that protects Earth and humanity.

I love how even though this show is just supposed tobe silly with good emotions and story, Rebbeca Sugar also puts a lot of thought into it, and what pearel says can account to lots of stuff, such as spiritual beliefs and the dollar is also probably a refrence to the illuminatii and masonists.

      • Insert "Polymorphic Sentient Rock People" caption with Ronaldo shopped into "Aliens" guy meme*

I thought this was a pretty interesting look into Ronaldo's world,  I wasn't expecting it to be so...desperate? Yeah, there's something a lot more wrong with him than just paranoia. As Gnx stated above, Ronaldo's insistence that there be something "more" than what there seems to be indicates that he craves some higher purpose and that he needs there to be something greater out there to be discovered so that he can change his status as the next-in-line Fryman.

Because unlike PeeDee, Ronaldo very clearly doesn't want to be his dad, he views his job as tedious and insignificant, much like his life, so he invented things that gave evidence of higher purpose for him. And in a way, we all do that, in fact, simply getting into and enjoying fiction (much like this show *cough*), is a type of escapism that leads us to entertain thoughts of grand purpose and world changing power, everyone wants to be Luke Skywalker, fated to be something greater than the farm-hand. Where Ronaldo goes wrong is that he takes escapism to unhealthy, nigh insane levels of crazy. Escapism is nice, but reality is reality, and he NEEDS to understand that reality can be good too, ya know, before he snaps and kills himself/others for consistently failing to conform to his insane theories. Which is why I think Steven really shouldn't have tried to "fix" him, that depression he was feeling needed to be felt so he could get over it and ground himself.

Furthermore, I totally refute Pearl's assertions on humanity. It's true that our escapism indicates the need for greater purpose, but even if we had the powers of gems, we'd still dream of something more, something different than what we have, its the curse that comes with having imagination and free will. Pearl in fact, seemed a bit snobbish in this regard, vastly over simplifying Humanity as insignificant and foolish when she, herself, has proven to be not so perfect. This snobbish behavior is becoming more evident as the status quo of Gems, to think that Humanity is weak, primitive and insignificant. It seems that Rose Quartz was the only gem to truly believe in humanity and in fact, managed to love a human enough to give up her physical form to bear him a child. Hopefully Steven can make them see other humans as more than just potential collateral damage.

They are trying really hard as to not care whether or not people see them as they are, magical sentient polymorphic rock people. The people of beach city are either oblivious to the magic that is shoved up their faces on a weekly basis or they are mutually uncarring for the existence of Gems.
