    • OH MY GOD THE FUSION ALEXANDRITE

One part of me loves this episode, another makes me dislike it. It's a shame that Steven has to lose his TV privileges for 1000 years!

Good thing we got to see the new fusion, but it was terrifying. Shame we got to see not fusion dance, that would of been great and weird at the same time.

Another thing I wanted to note, is when Steven hugged Connie, she was all embarrassed and blushing. You might say that it's because of her parents being nearby. But, maybe her opinion on Steven has changed since An Indirect Kiss..

Apparently alexandrite changes color when in the presence of natural light (daylight) and incandescent light (light produced by a body when heated; eg. candlelight, incandescent light bulbd).

You'd think the gems didn't choose what there fusion would be, it is just pre-determined on their personalities, unless it was named something else before it was named on earth. I wonder?

What so ever do you mean, Alexandrite is not named by someone but of something (Alexandrite is named after a real earth gem alexandrite, one of the varieties of the gemstone chrysoberyl; which includes the cat's eye or cymophane, alexandrite, and ordinary chrysoberyl), the gems don't choose what their fusion is, it's just a coincidence that the gem they fused into is named alexandrite.

Yeah, this pretty much explains Alexandrite's freakish color pallet, I honestly thought her design fit pretty well when I first saw her since I knew of the gem's properties prior to this episode

    • Seeing Opal's and Sugilite's designs, I was not expecting the frankensteinian lumbering grab-bag of nonsense that Alexandrite wound up being XD

Also, I think we can safely put "female" as the gems' genders on their individual pages, since on top of their preferred pronouns, we now know their bodies are "human constructs" that have the same biological functions as human beings. Putting "Sexless" and "non-binary" is just splitting hairs that don't exist.

Because it's a cartoon, I think it's okay to rely on how the characters are coded, look at dialogue, consider voice acting. (Steven and other characters refer to the gems as women.) But really since fusion gems are constructs (i.e. non-human), we could think about not labeling their genders at all.

    • I just realized something. Like stated with Mojo72400's post, Pearl's mouth and digestive systems were connected making her feel as if she ate.

So, does this mean that gem fusions are their own gem (ex. their own personality, own interests, etc) or just all of the other gem's personalities, likes, etc combined? Or is it more of an equal split between the Gems whom fused together to make and the actual gem (explaining what the heck happened with Sugilite).

    • I really don't want to say this, because I belive Steven Universe is one of the best animated shows to debut this year, if not of all time. So it's with a heavy heart that I say...I hated this episode.

The plot of the episode was cliche and boring. The gems fuse together and act awkwardly at dinner, hahahaha? I would have prefered it if Steven came up with the plan that they'd just say his mom was sick, and that each of the gems took turns being his "Mom". It would have been more interesting, and less of a waste of Alexandrite. Also, at the end where Connie's parents connect with the gems after they punish Steven rubbed me the wrong way. I know it was supposed to show that the gems really do know how to watch out for Steven and that they have his best interests at heart (if they even have those), but the way Connie's mom complimented their use of scolding made it sound like she says that stuff to keep an emotional leash on her daughter. That's...that's not cool, in any way shape or form. Sorry, but bad parenting is a pet peeve of mine.

Now that's not to say it didn't have redeeming qualities. I loved Garnet as "Ma Universe" and Steven's misunderstanding "Nuclear Family". And Alexandrites design is on par with the others, very super sentai.

So yeah, this episode wasn't for me. If you liked it, great! More power to you, but I didn't.

A lot of the latest episodes (about from Space Race and forward) are either hit and miss or meh (at least to me/some other's opinions). They really should of showed Alexandrite in another episode, but it'll be remembered as a good one just because of her appearence.

Steven should of really chosen someone, most likely Pearl (just have her eat very little and you are done).

So yeah, this episode wasn't for me. If you liked it, great! More power to you, but I didn't.

I found the plot quite cliche in a fun way. The whole mommy-switcheroo trope ain't bad either, but I'm glad they used this one as it shows Steven's naivete on how a perfect family would look. In his head the perfect family is composed of a mom, a dad and their children. Seeing as he no longer has a mom (and the way she brought Steven into this world wasn't normal either), he was afraid that Connie's parents might think of him less and prevent him from seeing Connie. Steven had three guardians Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl, each having good qualities as well as bad. So Steven wanted them to fuse because he thought that bringing all their good qualities together might cancel out the bad ones, this also solved his problem of bringing only one mom. I also see were you're getting at when you got "rubbed the wrong way" (huehuehuehue) from seeing Connie's mother praise The Gems when they were scolding Steven, it makes it look like they are keeping their daughter in an emotional leash, and probably they do. Children will be children, no matter how much a parent protects their child there are always outside forces that can potentially influence them into doing something stupid or bad. Keeping an emotional leash on a child isn't necessarily bad, as long as it's not tight. A parent's job to teach their child on what they should learn isn't always happy. When Connie's mom (they should really give her a name) complimented Steven's parent (only Greg, BTW) and guardians about their scolding techniques, I saw it as good. It wasn't bad parenting, she complimented on how The Gems (and Greg :D) handled Steven's scolding, on how they weren't gracious on giving the punishment. It would have been bad parenting if The Gems let Steven off the hook because they only "meant well" on their actions and Connie's parents parents agreeing with them. The sentences "This is for your own good!" and "It's becasue we love you" are common tools used by strict parents keeping their child on a tight leash but it is also used in conveying their actual intentions and truth. A lot of parents are really strict with their children most turn up ok and more than ok while others go down the wrong path, but what parenting method doesn't have these types of endings because there is no perfect parenting method.

      TL;DR:

The shows plot was cliche in a fun way, LOVED it. I liked Connie's parents (kinda reminds me of mine). Kinda irked by Alexandrite (mostly structure-wise) but still loved her.

And to those who didn't like the episode or felt like it was meh, there are still 20 epsiodes of Season 1 left and another 52 more of Season 2, to redeem itself to you.

      Yessteven

Sorry for the wall of text!

Unless the street light used an incandescent source of light, a gemstone of alexandrite would be red. Natural light from the sun in the morning and flourescent lights would make it appear mossy green. Afternoon sunlight (in twilight skies; dawn and dusk) and incandescent light (good example is fire) would make it appear red

Yeah... but it seems very strange to me, you never know, they've done this kind of thing before, when the centipeetle was released from it's gem it looked human for a couple of frames, then it was confirmed in Ocean Gem that all the monsters were just corrupted gems, it might mean that a secret about Garnet could be revealed in the next episode, 'Garnet's Universe', or maybe later

Although I'm still unsure about her being a fusion gem... I mean, she would be very weak for a fusion gem if that were the case, being that she only has two arms and is barely taller than pearl.

I don't think anything major about Garnet will be revealed in Garnet's Universe. It seems like just a silly episode to me, but who knows. Steven Universe has a way of making the episodes the opposite of what you think it will be like.

SU Episodes are becoming a little...weird.

It's a cartoon, it doesn't have to make perfect sense.

      Can't disagree with that.

Agreed, SU is getting to meh leveled-episodes for me.

I hope that an episode that will be major will come along, and would be either really popular or reveal something extreme. Some of these episodes are So Many Birthdays, Giant Woman, etc. I want to see another one of these episodes, that almost everyone in the SU community loves.

well, after a while, they basically have nothing else to introduce without f**king the plot up or anything, so might as well take care of some things like relationships and stuff

They already fused or synchronized (if you prefer to call it that way) in the episode. If you still haven't watched it, I have the episode link in my profile page.

    • Was rewatching this, don't know if it's already been brought up, but it's a little weird that an unmarked bus with no other visible passengers just happened to roll up at the exact moment two unsupervised children said they wanted to run away... Yeah, the kids might have been getting kidnapped.

It's a cartoon, they do that to try make humor for the younger audiences.

Yeah I know, it's just that I highly doubt that Rebecca Sugar would want to put something that graphic in Steven Universe.

    • Maybe, but I feel like implied-but-thwarted kidnapping isn't as severe as some of the stuff I'm surprised they got past network censors.

Yeah, it was from when Sugilite was back, and about when she said to Pearl "You left me behind!"

Yeah, it was from when Sugilite was back, and about when she said to Pearl "You left me behind!"

Then Pearl said to Sugilite "We just thought that you didn't need any help."

    • I dont think they were perfectly fused... They all had their orginal personalities dispite the other two fusions having a merged personality, and the arms all different colors (because they each controlled a pair), it just makes me think it was failed

i hope it was failed so we get a cooler looking fusion,

maybe it would be failed because this wasnt a serious situation?

      idk

      idk

The fusion was perfect, the fusion failed or started to fail when all of the gems had an internal argument (get it?), Pearl got disgusted by eating food, Amethyst wanted food, Garnet scolded both because she got annoyed or saw that they (P and A) had completely forgotten their initial goal, which was to help Steven. When all the three gems got distracted, they forgot their goal, the gems must need a common goal in oreder to stay fused, that is also what happened to Opal, the two (P and A, again) got distracted with saving Steven from his imminent doom that they completely forgot about the Heaven Beetle, that they started to blame each other after promptly being separated.

Alexandrite's arm coincide with an actual alexandrite gem, the color range for it is mossy green(natural light) to purple(mixed light) and red(incandescent light).

EDIT: I used to not like Alexandrite's design too, but it kinda grew on me.

      idk

No, I think that's just the way Alexandrite represents herself.

We already know that a fusion between gems is an amalgam of their physical and mental properties. Yes, they all retained their personalities but that in itself was the reason that they had the fusion broken. The Gems need to have a common goal in order to fuse because they need the fusion to be thinking independantly and not seperately.

Personally, I think Alexandrite looked really cool. She perfectly represents the real colour of an alexandrite gemstone and she certainly looks like she would be a formidable foe in combat; she may even be stronger than Sugilite.
