    • This episode was another good one, and while it wasn't a big reveal of stuff it still moved the story with new stuff while having it's own episode and the stuff that was shown is Peridots in town. Is she going to gather some Gem tech and pull a Doctor Wily(and likely fail becuase she doesn't know the Gems are strong enough to beat Peridot, that will be a hilarious reveal) or try and sneak into the temple and get lost with all the 'Archiac Gem' things. How would she react if she finds out the Crystal Gems impresion the Gems monsters instead of a more pragmatic solution the Homeworld probably does, holy moley she could probably just release a lot of them inside the temple! Might actually be a good progression for the Centipeetle and show off more of what steven could do in front of Peridot. Any idea's what Peridot could do in Beach City? Aside from be confused by the locals and argue with seagulls, then have those same seasgulls attack her.

    • I really hope Peridot argues with some seagulls now, that would be hilarious.

On the topic of Peridot being in town, sky is the bloody limit! Personally, I hope she ends up living in a junkyard and makes an army of robots...that get owned by the gems. Then she goes all "NEXT TIME CRYSTAL GEMS! NEEEEEEEEEEEEEXT TIIIIIIIIIIIME!"

Also I can't believe I didn't point this out, STEVEN can manipulate Peridot's pod. This would mean that manipulating tech isn't just Peridot's ability.

A small detail in Maximum Capacity hinted at that, Steven turned the TV off. But I think all gems can manipulate tech, in Meat beat Mania, Garnet turned the game machine on by touching it, and in The Message, Garnet produced electricity.

No offense, but I think it was kinda obvious. The pale color scheme, the fact that his little brother's named ONION. Though I still wonder why Yellowtail only speaks in mumbles even to his own son.

    • Honestly, I think this episode was great! Gave us some nice callbacks to previous episodes, further proved why I love the Cool Kids, and gave us some nice meta on the idea of a heavy storyline.

So much so that I'm sensing that the writers mainly vented in this episode on the idea of everything being deep after the first season. Not a major episode, but one I'll definitely enjoy looking into again and again.

I'm not sure if Peridot crawled away, or if someone took her out of the pod.  I don't know if there were any clues of a trail left behind.

I'm starting to think the Crystal Gems may be a little too quick to draw weapons and attack.  Also, Garnet might benefit from using Future Vision more often.

It was the STEP part that I found interesting, and I think the mumbles are genetic as Onion also speaks in that manner. I can not WAIT for an Onion Sour Cream bonding episode!

Yeah, they could be brothers if they share the same mother.

They will be step-brothers, if Onion is son of Yellowtail other wife, and Sour Cream is son of Yellowtail actual wife and other father.

True, but think of it this way: with all that's happened, from Lapis stealing the ocean temporarily to try escaping Earth to Jasper nearly sending them back to the Homeworld, would YOU act rationally if you knew one of your sworn enemies was still loose? Just saying, I think Garnet's entitled to be a tad more instinct prone for once. Besides, she does realize her mistake when the Cool Kids call them out for being too serious about this.

    • From what I have noticed, after Jailbreak the intense stuff has settled down for now. However Peridot is on Earth somewhere and I have no doubt she will be plotting something. It was interesting in the episode that Steven said that he feels that the Gems kind of blame him for his mother being gone. With Peridot loose on Earth and some of the stuff that Steven feels, I think this is an episode which will build up future episodes. With Steven feeling that the Gems kind of blame him for Rose being gone, this may get addressed in a future episode and I believe Peridot will be back and she will want revenge and that could happen in another future episode.

True, but remember that So Many Birthdays showed that Steven ages with the way he feels inside. So it's likely that he gained a maturity growthspurt in all this and thusly aged in the process. Physically, no, but mentally, yes.

We've seen him make mistakes, learn, and grow as a person, and it's been very gradual, over the course of the entire first season. It's not his gem that's causing his maturity, it's just him growing up. His gem affects his age in a very visible, specific way.

    • I don't know if anyone else ever noticed this, but my suspicions were somewhat affirmed in the pictures taken at the end of the episode: The Cool Kids are human counterparts to the Crystal Gems. In one of the photos, we see each Cool Kid posed with his/her corresponding Gem - Garnet with Buck, Pearl with Sour Cream, and Amethyst with Jenny. (If someone has a screencap of the photo, please post it)

Also, I believe Steven's ability to quickly understand and control the pod's basic maneuvering is foreshadowing of his future encounters with gem tech. Whereas the Crystal Gems are usually set in their ways and generally comfortable with not knowing everything, Steven is always curious and willing to try new things, even if there is a risk of them backfiring disastrously.

Finally, did anyone else notice the similarity between the pod's distress flare and the water patterns seen in "Mirror Gem" as Steven removed Lapis' gem from the mirror? Unlike the lack of effort on the Homeworld Gems' part to recover Lapis, I believe an active effort to recover Peridot by the Homeworld Gems will be revealed in the future.

Eh I don't think he is actually aging that way, I think he's aging at a normal human rate, other wise, we would've seen his age fluctuate wildly by now. I believe the events of SMB were only effecting him because his magic is triggered by his emotions and he was feeling insecure about his age at that time. It was the magic of his gem that was causing his age to actively change but its an active change, not a passive one that can't be turned off.  As soon as he felt like himself again, he turned off that magic and returned (mostly) to normal.

The magic was effecting him so badly because he was still unable to control his gem powers very well. But as we've seen, he now has a basic level of control of his gem, thus I doubt his gem would ever again force an age change unless it was at will.

He has? Hadn't noticed. Really, the only time his voice cracked was during the first half of Season 1, and even then it peetered out by So Many Birthdays and Lars and the Cool Kids.

Not necessarily. Bare in mind, I said he was MENTALLY maturing, not physically. It'd be painfully obvious if he was physically aging, you said so yourself.

There's a big difference between physical and mental aging. Your body can be that of a ten-to-eleven year-old and still have the mind of an adult. A lot of characters have that kind of theme for them; Dexter from Dexter's Lab, Anais from Gumball, heck even the Powerpuff Girls to an extent!

Yeah, I thought for sure that Peridot's escape pod was headed straight for Toronto (I live in Michigan near Detroit, and have been to Toronto and visited Windsor frequently as a kid, so I know Canada quite well, even watch CBC channel 9 which is easily picked up with a decent antenna in the Detroit area) and figure Beach City is probably in Florida somewhere, probably on the east coast.  Of course, the show never gives us a location for Beach City, but based on the climate and being a tourist town, it's definitely on the east coast and south of New Jersey.

I too, was really hoping for an episode of Peridot stuck in Canada, trying to find her way to the Kindergarten to salvage some Gem tech so she can get home or at least signal for a pick up, but she keeps getting infuriated by the Canadians being so darn polite with her.  I can almost picture the opening to Northern Exposure, but with Peridot inserted (I can just picture her try to order a Moose around and getting frustrated, LOL).  I guess it just looked like the escape pod was headed towards Canada, but once it entered the atmosphere Peridot steered it for a spot closer to Beach City but still out of view.

Then again, she was still tied up in Amethyst's Whip when the pod ejected (and how cool was that) and may not have had much control over where it landed.  She may have even tried aiming for the Kindergarten but wound up crashing in that field and the impact was so hard that she had to retreat into her Gem to heal and regenerate (and that would explain why the escape pod was so banged up, so damaged, if she hadn't been tied up she probably would have executed a soft controlled landing).  If so, then she will look different the next time we see her, and if she's been regenerating then that would explain what she's been doing all this time since the end of Jail Break, if she is just now leaving the pod and that was her emerging from the field onto the edge of the road just as Jenny drives the Pizza car into the field to check out the green glow.

    • I loved it. At the point where Garnet was 'This-close' to destroying that escape pod, we saw how far the Gems would go to preserve earth - They were ready, without any appearance of guilt, to KILL Peridot, albeit she wasn't in the pod, but you know what I mean.

I absolutely loved how the 'Cool Kids' defended Steven and showed the Gems that he is way too young to take on that kind of serious responsibility upon his shoulders, and that it was desperate for him to get a break. It was great to see the suspense dial down. Even though I tend to hate more filler-y episodes, they're kinda needed after the climax of a very escalated event. I love how Rebecca is breaking down the show again, to the point of ease, so that we're not just hanging on and dealing with any darker or suspenseful themes.

And even though this episode was more of a filler, it was still very important in building Steven's character and the moral of it was excellent- the Gems also seemed to learn something themselves, and we also found out that Peridot may have survived, considering that she wasn't in her pod. She might have also crawled a little ways away and just retreated into her gem there. She might be badly damaged. We don't know, but it's still something to consider.

I'd agree....if she didn't learn her lesson. See, for one, no one other than the Cool Kids knew Steven was in there to begin with and it wasn't until Jenny stepped in that they stopped themselves from making at horrible mistake.

Secondly, I sincerely doubt Garnet, even if Peridot WAS in there, would actually kill her. Most likely, she'd do what the Big Three did with all the Gem Monsters: bubbled them where they can't cause anymore harm.

Besides, given what's happened since Marble Madness, I think Garnet's entitled to a little rage against the marble-happy subordinate!

Well, you have to consider it from her point of view, they see that flare and the yellow Diamond symbol, show up and see the badly damaged escape pod chasing the Cool Kids around and shooting at them.  Garnet and the others probably left in a hurry and didn't notice Steven was not home and fully expected to find Peridot stuck in the damaged escape pod.  If Jenny hadn't stopped Garnet and it was Peridot in the Escape Pod then Garnet would have likely shattered the Escape Pod and critically injured Peridot, forcing her back into her Gem, it would not necessarily have destroyed Peridot.  Since it was Steven in there, it's a good thing that Jenny did intervene in time, as the impact might have just killed Steven, even with the shock absorbing goop protecting him.

Eh, pal, you DO know that it was hard for anyone to see Steven in there once that screen shield was accidentally turned on, right? Yeah, WE knew he was in there and so did the Cool Kids, but the Big Three didn't see it was him until they got much, MUCH closer than they were when they arrived.

Plus I must reiterate, there's a HUGE difference between killing and forcing into one's Gem. Granted, I'm not sure if Steven has that ability, but nevertheless; it's been said by multiple episodes that the only way to put a Gem down permanently is to crush the gem completely, breaking it into dust.

Also, need I remind you that even if she DID punch and hurt Steven in the process, the shield that Steven can generate would no doubt protect him from all threats, even those of his own family. True, he hasn't quite mastered it yet, but it's been made clear that Steven can do this if the situation is dire enough.

And as a final note, what's with your vendetta against Garnet? What do you have against (at least to me) one of the finest characters the show can offer us aside from, well all the Crystal Gems, really.

Okay, just looked. Nothing out of the ordinary. Also, if it was Peridot, wouldn't the thing in your circle be moving? When I looked, it just sat there. It's probably just some rocks, Sour Cream was throwing rocks at the escape pod, so rocks would be littered about the area.

I was wondering why didn't Jenny, Buck, and Sour Cream invite Lars to hang out with them. I guess they must've like Steven more. When the gems told Steven to tell them about the escape pod, it's great that they stood up for him. Steven needs a break because he helped them escape from prison while they were being held by Jasper and Peridot.

Oh it wasn't her fault at all imo lol I don't blame her, she had no idea Steven was in there...I think, cough future vision cough cough, of course she may have just gone with the possibility of Steven not being in the pod. And the anger wasn't only because of Peridot almost killing Steven, but because of the fact that Peridot, a homeworld gem, was on earth and Garnet is well aware of what they want to do and she wasn't going to let that happen.

        Loading editor
    • It was her fault, but not entirely, also in future vision she said that she sees multiple possible futures, so I don't think she got the future vision that showed her steven was in the pod. Now I do agree that it was out of character for her to act like that, but can you really blame her?

        Loading editor
    • I personally subscribe to the theory that when Garnet is feeling MASSIVELY emotional her future vision powers don't work as much. Like when Steven was almost dying in "Too many birthdays" and she thought shaking him violently would've solved things. I love how Garnet the usually quiet leader of the team can have the BIGGEST freakouts.

Yeah you maybe right on that, she did look pretty surprised upon realization of Steven being in the pod. And like I said earlier naw I don't blame her the least bit for her actions.

Future Vision doesn't work that way.

      - It reveals a multitude of possible futures.

      - It does not reveal the one, actual future.

It is not Peridot. Everything indicates it was a big rock sorrounded by tinier rocks; the green glow that looks "kinda like" Peridot's hair/head is merely the taller larger rock lighting up due to the ambient green lightning.

It wasn't moving or anything, either.

There are millions of possibilities.  Garnet said that herself in Future Vision.  In most of them maybe she saw Peridot.

That Steven is starting to pick up on the fact that certain people blame him for his mother's fate hits me right in the feels.

It's then when I realized, this isn't just a kid anymore.  He's a selfless, surprisingly upbeat person.  But deep down, he's depressed.  He's worried.  He's SCARED.  And he's hurt.  And that's something someone who acts like him should never have to worry about.

Also, I have a weird feeling that if Steven and Amethyst ever end up fusing, they will end up being a fun-spirited person, but clumsy and, from their pasts and being so clumsy, self-conscious.

Really, I didn't expect "Joy Ride" to bring on the feels but that one quote and it's implications really got to me. The Gems are the only ones who he could turn to when it came to "magical Gem stuff" and now he doesn't have anybody. Not to mention they are his adopted mother figures as well - for him, their "son", to feel that they blame him for something as serious as the death of Rose...

Dang it, Steven Universe. Y u so serious for a cartoon?!

No, I meant that it's confirmed to be on Delmarva in the series.  Ronaldo said on his blog that they lived on Delmarva.  As for Beach City, it's actually based off of multiple places that give it its looks and some of the inhabitant's names.

Just cause the post is old, doesn't mean the comment is no longer valid.

Peridot clearly was doing work for homeworld. She was with Jasper cause shes under their command. And we all know she's a tech-head. We know nothing about her personal motivations, we have no idea what's happening to her while she's on earth. It's very possible that - even though she's in the villain camp right now she will have a face-turn at some point.

I personally wouldn't try to guess what the writers are going to pull.

      oh maybe

I dont think Jasper would kill her. I think that she's more afraid of being casted out as a defected or corrupted gem by Yellow Diamond. To her she probally was just taught that oh this is her job and it helps her fellow gems so do it. She probally doesnt even think its wrong to hurt earth since its commonly down coring out other planets for more gem population. She just doesnt see the other side of the battle and it seems like she hardly even knows about the Earth War seeing that Jasper knew the cg but not Peridot. So I do think that she is a good gal but just does it because thats how her society taught her.

    • I think gems need to be penetrated or punctured by something ot be damaged. They then go into their gem. For a gem to die, their stone must break, as I've always imagined in the gem wars battles. I imagine that the gems probably led to the rise of human intellect, probably leading them with knowledge, so perhaps a few fought for the gems. I think there was atleast life when the gems came, since that would be why rose would wanted to protect earth.

    • I think a gems defensive properties may depend on the hardness rating of the specific gem. Pearls for example rank at a 3 or 4 , so there's a good chance of her being physically the weakest. Now quarts on the other hand can range up to 7 on the hardness scale, so Jasper and Amethyst's crazy strength makes complete sense.

Agreed, their physical constructs are most likely not as stable as the gems, making them much more easy to injure. I point this out because theoretically the invisble monster was chalcemony, a gemstone with a hardness rating of 6-7! OR- maybe a gem's strength is based on concentration, which I could also buy as Pearl was stabbed while she wasn't looking, and thinking it was just a demonstration didn't put her defenses up.

We were talking about how Gernet attempting to smash the marble thing probably wouldn't have killed steven, just hurt him pretty badly, cause he like most gems is stronger than a human, strong enough to seriously hurt low level gems/corrupted gems even if he's barely effectual against the crystal gems themselves.

    • Yeah and amethyst got hurt just by falling on a rock, along with how many corrupt gems were defeated by wood, electricity, a spear and there is Pearl with the sword, I do personally believe that gems can be hurt by human weaponry, plus it's not like Pearl pulled that sword out of her gem, those were regular swords, not gem swords. But if humans got their hands on gem destabilizers, they might be able to modify their weaponry and make them effective against gems, imagine a gem destabilizers mini gun, or a gem destabilizer tank, sure those would effective against gems, but they won't do crap against humans, forgive my language.

I think they needed to be actually damaged or penetrated/puntured to be ingured enough to have to retreat into their gem. Bullets create holes, and missiles, and cannonballs simply would push them back.

A cannonball would be more damaging than falling on a rock.

Yes, but thats very broad because there is many kinds of weaponry we know. I don't think human weaponry is specific and it depends more on what kind. For instance, I think blunt weapons only work if it breaks the gem.

I think things relating to force harm the gems by harming their stone. Other than that, the body is harmed by being punctured.

    • Ok I'll be more specific, sledgehammers, tanks, assault rifles, pistols, shotguns, lasers, bazookas, chainsaws, bombs, sniper rifles, tazers, and more of the modern weaponry. I think those would be pretty effective against any gems, maybe only if they hit the gem attached to them. But if those types of weapons aren't effective, than how the heck is it that amethyst almost died just by falling on a rock, and how is it that Pearl kind of died when all that happened was that she got stabbed by a sword.

Ok I'll be more specific, sledgehammers, tanks, assault rifles, pistols, shotguns, lasers, bazookas, chainsaws, bombs, sniper rifles, tazers, and more of the modern weaponry.

I think its like this. Certain weapons are for certain body parts. To harm the body, you have to have a weopon that would puncture the body. The gem would then retrwat into their stone. To harm the gem, you would need force or a blunt weapon to damage it. If the stone completely breaks, the gem is dead. Any weapon works on the stone with enough force, though.

This episode was another good one, and while it wasn't a big reveal of stuff it still moved the story with new stuff while having it's own episode and the stuff that was shown is Peridots in town.

Peridot is a Master Technition. Give her a job in the temple doing repairs and maintainence and it would be in heaven.

Ah, pragmatic solution? Remember the homeworld treets most gems are manufactured, like a clone army. They probably just dispose of any gem who doesn't have a valuble reason for them to be kept alive. We have no idea what they do. It's actually plausible that if Peridot find out they have only been imprisoning the gems, and that Steven and Pearl hope to someday fix them, that she might help them to ressurect/repair the corrupted gems.

      Just Steven and Pearl?

Well, no, but it may be preferred if Steven handles negotiations. Remember, he came the closest to healing the Centipeetle. Incidentally, that's the one I'm hoping is the one he, Amethyst and Garnet have to chase. If not, I'll settle for a corrupted Peridot that tried invading the Crystal Temple.
