  • When I first started watching Steven Universe, two years ago. The only grip I had was in the episode "The Return". I asked to myself is where was the National Guard. Yes, I know now that SU is set in an alternate Earth. But still where was the SU version of the National Guard, as in the Delmarva branch. Now come to think about it where where was the police in all of this? I have a theory why they, the national guard and the police, never showed up to assist the CGs. For the national guard, I believe that Mayor Dewey begged the govener of Delmarva not to send troops to combat this unknown foe, as the soldiers don't know what they're up against. For the police, I think Mayor Dewey, called the chief of Delmarva police to send police officers to block entry to Beach City, with assistance from the Delmarva National Guardsmen. This is where I believe, the national guard and the police were during the whole ordeal. They were busy blocking Beach City from entry, making sure nobody gets in to the town while letting the evacuated out. This seems to make sense to me when I think about it. It's also what I believe it's a good thing the national guard diddn't get involved in the fight against the handship. Think about this, If you were Mayor Dewey would you really want to sent troops to fight the likes of Jasper? As may you may noticed the CGs got wrecked in this episode. In following episode, Jailbreak, the CGs were able to defeat Jasper and Peridot. I could hardly imagine how many lives of the soldiers have been saved just for the national guard not getting involved. Which I believe, it's for the best that the military and the police should not get involved in the CG affairs, for there safety and lives.

    • idk why they didn't appear, but they would shoot the gems on the gem and kill them, so......i'm glad they didn't show up.

    • Now come to think about it where was the police and military during Ocean Gem. Think about this, every government on earth would be flipping out because the ocean just disappeared. I believe that the reason for the military and the police not showing up is the same reasons as above. As I stated before, it's in my belief, for the best that the military nor the police do not get involved in the ordeal. What are your thoughts on this?

    • I assumed the events happened to quickly for them to show up in time

I'm pretty sure the gems wouldn't be effected by bullets

    • It was a large hand in the sky. Could've been assumed to be some blimp. Same with the Red Eye in "Laser Light Cannon". You don't see that every day.

Other than that, I can get behind the theory, Onion.

    • Two possible answers:

      -For the Plot's sake

-Because they know about the existence of the CGs. I guess that's already confirmed that the humans know about the Gems.

Ok I realised you specifically meant on the gem stones, so I made a mistake. Though if we're also talking about the crystal gems then Garnet has the advantage of her gaunlets protecting her gems.

    • I heard the theory that the crystal gems have this whole deal with the humans that so long as the cg take care of gem matters the military doesn't interfere which would explain why in ocean gen the humans are only concerned about how no ocean would affect tourist season and not why it's missing or what'll happen as a result.

    • As stated. It's for the best that military doesn't interfere. As you see in Ocean Gem, The CGs are getting slammed by Lapis. It wasn't until Steven defused the situated by healing Lapis's gem, which ends with Lapis leaving the planet peacefully. If the military showed up, instead of the CGs. Well, I could hardly imagine have happened. But I do know it would have ended badly for them and Earth's ocean.

    • To me, one of the most fascinating things about this show is its unique premise of "What if aliens took over the Earth, but THOUSANDS of years ago...". I adore seeing the ramifications of it all, down to the smallest and subtlest of effects, like the pervasiveness of diamonds as a symbol of strength and security (showing up on the currency, as well as in corporate logos, like the tail of the jet plane). I can only imagine that the Crystal Gems, predating all current human societies, would be well known by all the world governments, and have been given sovereignty over the gem areas that they patrol, including our favorite beach town. While the CGs have clearly never made any attempt to integrate themselves into those societies (as is proven by Pearl's comments about not having a driver's license), I agree that there has been a distinct lack of response from normal human authorities over the CG's activities, and that can really ONLY happen, if the gems are sanctioned by those same authorities to handle whatever happens in their territory. I can't imagine the governments of the world not knowing about the pyramids in Egypt, and technically, the presence of gems on Earth is much longer than even that (pyramids were about 4500 years ago, and the gems either started or ended the rebellion almost 6000 years ago (and if that was the end, then we're talking about almost 7000 years). I can't imagine the human governments NOT knowing about and respecting the authority of the Crystal Gems.

    • Well first of all I would think that the military could be able to take a gem out by either poofing or killing it. As we see in some episodes it actualy doesnt take that mucht to take a gem out. Sadi poofs a corrupted with a wooden spear and Amethysts gem gets cracked by falling of a cliff so we can assume that a bullet (not to mention high caliber shells or similar)  could  harm and potencial kill a gem.

I also think that the reason that goverment authoritys dont show up during the fights is that the gems have a agreement or similar with the goverments witch states that they shouldnt interfer with gem buisness and I also think that this agreement was made after shortly after the end of the rebellion (where, as some episodes imply, some humans fought alongside the crystal gems and I could imagine that this humans (if they existed and surived) later had positions of authority in early human cultures)

The only thing that bugs me a little bit about that is that in that way it makes humanity look very weak and very depended on the gems and it has somehow the feel of lets say some Superman stories or later Dragonball Z season on it where human characters feel a bit useless (with some few exceptions) and the aliens (in this case the gems) sometimes even a bit arrogant. Would just like to see a episode where this gets a bit evened out for example where the Gems are in a situation they can handle without a ordinary human or where the townspeople save the gems for once.

    • Turns out I'm not the only one who thinking about this. A youtuber named Akeem also asked this question.

      Here's a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQxT2r31Kvs&list=PLA1tqSMePEbCLOMvJq4z-_t_A1cJJ0Rg5&index=29
